[Warning Light] Filter regeneration or filter replacement
#1
Hi, I’m new to the forum. Registered disabled I own a heavily adapted wheelchair conversion,  2013  diesel automatic Multispace. Three weeks ago the warning triangle lit up and went off. Next day filter at risk message came on. Took it into garage to have oil replaced, but garage couldn’t clear code for blocked filter. They suggested I drove at 60mph for 20mins.  Last night I drove it at 70mph for 10miles then dropped gear manually to increase rpm to 3,00o and held 65 + for 13minutes.

I heard the exhaust “tink” as it cooled down when getting back to normal road speeds.
The warning is still on. Do I need to drive further/faster/for longer and then take it to a garage to “try” and get the filter code cleared?
Or is it a case of pay to have a new filter fitted?
I’m not rich and have spent all my savings and pension thus far.
How much is a partial filter cost DIY and Garage refit?
Any advice would be appreciated.
This vehicle needs to be a keeper as my wheelchair and vehicle is my only chance of living independently.
Thanks in advance steve

you need to replace the eolys pouch, or fill the reservoir with the dpf additive then do the reset procedure using diagbox.

What's the mileage currently at? Driving fast doesn't clear the filter. The ECU has to initiate a burn to get it to 900° rather than the 400° it usually sits at. Proper Citroen diagnostic software called Diagbox is required to see how much oil ash and or soot is in the filter, you could also have no Eolys PAT fluid left.

At 100k miles it will automatically do this regardless of ash loading and refuse to play nice till the filter is cleaned out, or replaced, and the fluid pouch swapped out or refilled, and both recoded as "replacement parts" in Diagbox.

Most general back street garages would not be able to do this - you need someone who specialises in Citroen or Peugeot with the correct software for the Citroen version. Or it's no joy I'm afraid.

2013 was still a pouch system with no level measurement. The DPF could be full or simply hit 100k miles. Whichever comes first, will cause this. It does not know whether the pouch is full or not (won't be by now anyway) but the DPF will also be full of ash or close.

Differential pressure sensors tell it when the DPF is clogged, it doesn't guess.

yes good observation!
i do think it has more than 100k miles and that's why he has the warning

Thank you for all the replies. It’s converted to carry and drive from a electric wheelchair. The fuel tank therefore was replaced with a 30L diesel tank, from new, which is mounted inside N/S of the rear of the vehicle. The DPF fluid tank is mounted ontop of this after market fuel tank.
The previous owner was told that the ECU works out how many times the fuel filler cap is removed. Then works out the amount of fluid? With the new 30L diesel tank, the owner was led to believe the ECU would get calculations wrong. & Simply resetting the code I guess.
The tank was assumed to be empty on inspection.very light and no sense of fluid movement when tilting back and forth. However Then the garage re-filled the PAT fluid, Part no PE9736A1 which cost £160. The garage cleared all codes except for the (filter excessively Blocked code.) They instructed me to try giving it a good run to see if it cleared out some of the contaminates.

The vehicle has done 49k from new.

The previous owner explained that this low fluid warning came on some 3 years ago (a few thousand miles ago) He was shown some “tank” under the engine bay while the vehicle was on the lift. And told there’s still plenty of fluid left in (enough for another 50k) and they simply reset the code.
On taking it to the local garage 2 weeks ago. The mechanic couldn’t locate the DPF tank and after returning the vehicle to me. I had someone else remove the engine under tray and wheel arch slash guards, to look more in-depth., still no sight of the tank. So I have no idea what the garage pointed out to the previous owner. Who I believe 100%. The DPF tank was located eventually as said.

I think due to the disabled conversion that the vehicle has never driven hard since new. I’m only driving short distances at legal road speeds. As I’m new to these modern Diesel engine systems, I’m completely green to it all.

Do you think I should take the vehicle to a Citroen specialist, since driving it fast to get the exhaust hot doesn’t appear to be any solution?

Am I safe to drive it around in the meantime?

Thanks in advance. Third week and all food supplies have been consumed. I’ve hospital appointments etc pending.
If I have to pay, what is my best approach?

There's no tank in the engine bay. Driving it hard won't clear the DPF as it catches soot regardless of engine speed or temperature, in fact it fills up quicker when cold or in short journeys, and when it's full, it's full. The regen process turns it to ash, but  eventually even that hits a limit..then it will no longer carry out regeneration routines. The ECU has to inject extra fuel way past the normal running amount and the result is the DPF gets heated to nearly 1000° - the ECU is in control of that and it's nothing to do with the driving speed or process, regardless of what less informed garages think.

It does check the cap being removed but it knows how much fuel was added so it calculates the amout of pat fluid to add to the tank. That fluid is needed to clean the DPF.

How many miles has it actually done? 100k miles is the DPF lifespan limit.

You will have to find a garage who know Citroen diesels and have the software, dealer or otherwise. If it is blocking up, then it will go into limp mode and then refuse to start.

Maybe a local garage can check of the DPF is actually blocked but even if they cleaned or replaced it, you still need the Citroen software to reset things or the warnings and behaviour will just carry on to no-start.

The garage who topped up the Eolys tank would need to code the ECU to tell it the fluid has been refilled. Clearing the codes doesn't resolve this particular issue.

By the way, I do understand just how vital this car is to you. I wouldn't point you to a dealer unless absolutely necessary and I think in this case it's almost justified, except they cost a fortune! A good independent Citroen or Peugeot garage would be well equipped to deal with this kind of thing.

Now I hope the chap who owns another website doesn't mind, but he has a great list of independent garages on his pages, and the site is called Citroenet. Have a look and see if any are near to you:

Thank you Zion. I’m seeing a bigger picture. The car is booked in to a “recommended” Citroen garage next Wednesday. They will go through it and hopefully force regen.
