[Engine] B9 1.6 hdi 90 cambelt issues
#1
Hi everyone I’m new on here so please accept my apologies if I’m posting this wrong.
Can anyone please help. I have a 1.6 hdi 90 vtr 7 seater multi space 2010. I’ve had the car nearly ten years, having had a 2.0 hdi 2002 mk1 multi space before. So do the last twenty years I’ve only had berlingo, and for the first time I have a real problem.
My car has done 105000 miles. I’ve recently replaced injector seals, an egr valve and fuel filter. Then the crankshaft main oil seal went kicking oil out everywhere. So, I’ve replaced the oil seal, replaced the crank sprocket and woodruff key and now replaced the crank sensor. Along of course with the timing belt tensioner and water pump.

I’ve got the engine timed up with the pins locking all the shafts and pumps, I’ve even timed the fuel pump even though you don’t need to on a common rail diesel. I’ve turned the engine over by hand a dozen times, the pulleys all line up. I’ve tried to start the car but it turns over but won’t fire up. A code was shown po335, which is the crank sensor, which I’ve now replaced. I’ve re checked the timing but it still won’t start and shows the same code. I’m ready to set light to the thing, has anyone got any ideas please,?.

Welcome.

Only things I can suggest are to be doubly sure that the crank sensor wiring connector plug is fully clean & home. After that you could try some easy start if you're sure (which from reading the above you are) to see if the engine catches.
But if the ECU thinks there's a problem with the CPS, it's unlikely to fire the injectors.

Just wondering if any coolant could have found it's way into the crankshaft position sensor plug when you were changing the water pump, if so this could be your problem as it's unlikely for you to have two defective crank position sensors.
As cancunia suggests make sure the plug is fully home and is clean & dry, maybe give it a blow out with compressed air or contact cleaner.
Check the wiring to the plug just in case it has become damaged somehow.

Did you have the fuel system pipes open during the timing belt change?  if so there will be air in the system, this can give big problems due to air locks, try priming the system with the priming bulb, if still no go try the easy start method as mentioned.

Did you shut down the BSI properly before disconnecting the battery, and confirm you didn't unplug the ECU while the battery was still hooked up.

Also however, is the fuel system drum-tight, fully bled, and have you got Diagbox?

Hi all , thanks for the suggestions. I’ll try and cover each suggestion.
I was careful not to disconnect any fuel pipes as I wanted to avoid bleeding the system. So just moved the pipes out of the way.

I did clean all around the area of the crank (as the oil seal had gone) with first degreaser, wiped off, then brake cleaner and dried with air ( I have a compressor).

I’ve stripped back the outer sleeving going to the crank sensor looking for breaks.
The BSI thing is something that I  didn’t even think about. I just disconnected the battery and started work.

I’m going back to checking the wiring. I’ll let you know, ??.

No worries. Reason I ask about the BSI is that if it gets shut down wrongly, or disconnected while it's shutting down (like your family PC) it does not like that and can become corrupted. May be resettable and usually is, by the BSI reset procedure. There's also a procedure to follow when reconnecting the battery to prevent the same corruption of data.

Have you found the problem yet?
