Outer cv boot replacement

Hi all. As in the title, I need to replace the outer cv boot driver’s side and looking for some advice. I’ve done these before on vw’s and it’s just a case of knocking off the outer cv joint and changing the boot as the inner joint is bolted to the transmission but looking at the Haynes manual for the Berlingo, it talks about draining the transmission oil and removing the whole driveshaft. I’ve not had a look at my Berlingo yet but is this really necessary? Is it possible to just change the boot in situ? Thanks

The drive shaft is splined into the g/box, so to knock off the CV joint the shaft has to be held solid. I've tried it before and found its very hard to get the joint off without the shaft coming out of the g/box and losing oil. No big deal really as the filler plug is very handy to get at.

The drivers side (RHS) driveshaft isn't that bad as it has the centre bearing so that holds it in place and stops it coming out of the gearbox, the passenger side (LHS) slides out of the box for fun !

The CV joint can be very difficult to remove and the wire C clip that secures the joint is often deformed when you remove the joint so you may need a replacement.

If you can get away without removing the joint I would fit a stretch boot and save a bit of hassle.  

I've used the stretch boots & cone from this seller before, they work well and are a good quality product.

Can you still get split boots? Fitted one years ago to an Austin 1800 IIRC.

Yes the split glue together boots are still around but the stretch boots seem to have taken over from them.
