Have you checked the plug is attached on the sensor? It may have just come off or is corroded so not getting a signal.
Does your tank look like this, the level sensor is item 5. It could also be covered in s***e, may be worth it to syphon the expansion down to the bottom, put the fluid in a clean bucket or jug, then pull the sensor / level sender and see if the end is furred up / clean and reinsert? This diagram is the 1.9D engine version.

Thanks Scott its exactly what I've got ,is the sensor a push fit ?? the reason I'm asking is its quite close to the back of the headlight housing so not much room to work with ,so will have to try and remove bottle and sort it out ,ps, is there a prt number for the sensor ???

No worries Gwyn, the part number is 1306F0 and here is one on eBay, it seems to be a twist-and-unlock design with little probes, so could actually be faulty in your case - there are two versions, short pin and long pin so better to get a look at yours before ordering one.
Under £8 so not too bad, looks easy to remove but as I said I would try to syphon the coolant bottle out and keep the fluid so you can put it back when you have looked at the sensor.

Thanks Scott, just phone citroen dealers near me and they gave me part number as1306 FZ and said it was £84 !!! He suggested to look on Ebay for alternitives, he didnt mention the length of the probes !! So ill try and remove it and take it from there ,big difference in pricing isn't it !!

Absolutely! I find no results anywhere for 1306 FZ so only F0 works, I can't find the number he said at all. Look at yours and post back what it says on it.
Just check any numbers stamped on yours when you get it out, it will unlock anti--clockwise I expect and then pull straight out (gently) - once it's out you will see all the details.
It is always worth checking both dealer and ebay however, I have found it to work both ways. sometimes ebay is cheaper, sometimes the dealer.
