I understand that blanking egr will bring on engine light. Does it put the van into limp mode at all ?

No limp mode for EGR blank, but it will not pass an MOT with a light on the dash. Also you cannot just pull a bulb for two reasons. First they check if the light works on ignition on (it must work) then the dash cluster uses SMD surface mount tiny LEDs so not possible to disconnect.
Because I bet that was your next thought... disconnect the bulb...
Nope.

I have read somewhere that a small hole drilled in the blanking plate solves the issue.

The B9 measures the airflow, if it does not match the map, a EML is thrown.
