Suspected leaking heater matrix
#1
Hi guys,

Whilst I had the front floor carpet out to apply sound deadening today, I noticed that the factory sound deadening mat that shrouds the centre section was wet on the passenger side (see pic), which explains why I was getting pooled moisture in the mid floor section. The liquid was sort of greasy like antifreeze hence suspecting the heater matrix is buggered

What level of a howler is it to investigate/rectify? Any advice will be gratefully received

Thanks, James

It's up inside the dash - don't know if you have to remove the dash completely, or at minimum the centre console. I'd be certain it's a dash-out job.

Cmon it's the only bit left that you haven't unscrewed!!  Rolleyes

Must admit it would make me cringe having to pull the dash. There's a bloke on YouTube posts B9 dismantling videos, I put a link in the top of the How tos section, he does the dash in one of them.

Before you go ripping the car apart, have you been loosing coolant from the header tank? If not, then it is unlikely to be the heater leaking.

The only bits left joined on are the steering wheel and the engine...he ripped it to bits weeks ago lol

You don't have to take the dashboard out. I managed to remove the matrix (small a/c radiator) gaining access by removing lower panels underneath the main dashboard. It was several years ago when I was tracing a strange smell. The matrix and piping were fine with no sign of a leak.
The smell did eventually go (I think it was actually a small leak gas around the EGR valve which sealed over time with soot).
