There's a couple of threads on this already I know but I thought I'd post my idea.
I got sick of the sight of of the frayed scabby rag but couldn't justify the expense of replacing just for that reason..
Pull up the large plastic surround (it's in there tight) and unclip the circular gaitor base from inside.
Put the stick in second or fourth and pull up hard and the knob will unclip.
Leave that bloody hacksaw in the shed.
With a coffee or beer at the table turn the gaitor inside out,release it from the base ring pegs, snip the cable tie at the collar and slice through the stitches.

Lay it out, iron it flat and use it as a template to cut from your chosen new material
This was some we got from a charity shop for pennies.
Sew up the seam,small cable the for the collar,back onto the base rings pegs,turn it back outside in and clip back to the vehicle.

Took an hour,cost pennies, and worth a million quid in satisfaction.
