Dead van!
#1
Morning people. My van failed to start this morning, turns out timing belt has failed. What damage is likely to be done as have been told dealer can't touch it until beginning of August. It is 21 plate 1.5 100hp. Thanks.

Probably the cam chain rather than cambelt that's failed.  Who made the diagnosis?  The following threads should be of interest:

How many miles has the vehicle done?
Work van:     2020 1.5 BlueHDi 100 Enterprise Berlingo
Spare van:    2001 1.9 600d Berlingo

Turns out it is the chain. I need it fixed ASAP. Its 21plate with 96k on clock. What is worst case scenario if fixing myself? Bent valves and broken rockers or are do the camshafts twist?

Not sure on the 1.5's, but on the 1.6's it's normally the water pump that seizes making it spin a lobe on the camshaft rather than whacking a valve. Is it not under warranty, or has it done too many miles?

It's registered march 21 and done 97k. I have heard that many stories about dealers taking an age to get these jobs done. I am more interested in getting it fixed than saving money and waiting on the dealer.

Yep, know where you're coming from there. Wheels not turning, it's not earning. I'm also a big believer in "If you want something doing right..."

I've just had a look and it seems like the 1.5's have a hollow camshaft and pushrods like the 1.6, so I'd be saying there's good vibes for it not being a huge parts bill. Obviously never know until you take it apart, but positive thinking.

Ive done a few of these 1.5’s now, not that bad a job, get the cam carrier off, if your lucky you’l get away with just some rockers (if all valves look level with carrier removed your in with a good chance) , new chain and tensioner, put a belt and water pump on while your in there, also drop sump and clean out any bits of rockers/chain that may of fell down.

Ive had a couple that ive had to pull the head off due to bent valves, and one that broke a bit of the carrier where the tensioner mounts, repairable by a decent alloy welder/machine shop.

Not had one so far with lobes turned on cam, if you get stuck for anything or want pics of good cams to compare lobes get in touch. I have a few spare cams and a good carrier.

Good luck !

Also i think dealers will only want to fit a new engine in a case where chain is broke, if there just noisy but running you can get the updated fix under warranty (provided you meet criteria) new updated kit is  8mm chain instead of 7mm new cams/carrier etc, if outside of warranty i think parts alone are around £1600.

Just to add, im doing another chain next week, rang dealer to order chain to find theyve stopped selling chain and tensioner on their own, chain and tensioner was less than £30 last time i bought them, now they only sell a kit with cams at over £600, ive managed to find aftermarket chain and tensioner that looks oe to be fair, these are around £50, they are supplied by ultraparts and the part number is TK402.
