A mate sent me some pics of an engine, they are made in Japan and used for large ships.
This one looks to be taken at the Meyer shipbuilding plant in Papenburg,Germany..........
.....Meyer produce cruise ships and I have seen some of these huge vessels up close when delivering there.
This is a crankshaft being fitted at the factory in Japan.....
...note the ladders that go down into the crankcase!
And check out the piston sleeves........
....and the size of the studs!

These are the pistons....
...the holes are oilways to stop the top of the piston overheating.
And the piston connected to the con-rod...

Dropping the crank shells into place....

38" diameter and 16" wide!
Completed 12 cylinder engine....

...and they are two-stroke as well.
That's all the pics he sent me.

For more info on this amazing engine visit Wikipedia:

As far as I have been able to determine Wikipedia has got its facts right!

Seriously,I don't know how they'd start it,probably with a generator or donkey engine.
The big Caterpillers years ago used to have a petrol donkey engine mounted on the side like a starter motor, you used to have to pull a de-compression lever, and then start the donkey engine and pull another lever which engages the donkey engine to the flywheel on the main engine.
When the oil pressure was up far enough you'd release the de-compression lever and pull the throttle lever back and it would fire up (usually),but you had to be quick to release the donkey engine.
The early donkey engines also had a rope pull start.

Worked on probably one of the last Cats to have a donkey engine when I worked for the Coal Board, a CAT619 motor-scraper with a petrol donkey engine to start it. Prior to this I worked as an apprentice at a place that used to overhaul Ruston Bucyrus excavators and they used to be started with a twin cylinder donkey engine, one cylinder was a combustion engine while the other was a compressor and the main engine was started with compressed air. I remember my forman giving me the job of refurbishing a small Ruston donkey engine of this type and saying "Enjoy this job as it might be the last of its type that you ever come across". No pre-finished bearing shells, all had to be scraped and "butted and bedded", the stuff that proper fitters worked on...

Thanks for that. I remember my dad telling me about stuff like that and saying "this modern crap" isn't nearly as good as the old engines - in 1959
