What's behind the barrier?
#1
Hi all,

Just a heads up for those of you who may be Europe bound in your Berlingo. As you know speed cameras are found on most European motorways and autobahns but they are now appearing on the slip roads into service areas and service area exits. There are speed restrictions when leaving motorways in Spain and these appear to be monitored by safety cameras which can be located just behind the green segregation barriers. I can not confirm their exact use as it has been suggested that they are only for security purposes....I won't take the chance! I'm not for or against cameras but am against getting run down by someone speeding! Enjoy your trip and stay safe.

Thanks for the heads-up. Will be driving in Spain this fall.

Ed: Just remembered this. If you are driving in Switzerland they are installing new and very fancy radar cameras on the autobahns. Usually in straight stretches. They can monitor up to 35 cars at a time and not only measure the speed of each but the distance between you and the car ahead of you. Fines for moving traffic violations in Switzerland are quite expensive. Couple of years ago some young rich kids decided to race their Lamborghini's and Ferrari's from Milano to Paris. They got caught in CH. Cars confiscated and sold at auction. Hundreds of thousands of CHF fine each and a year in the lockup.

Hi 3rensho,

Yes, very expensive! Also remember to purchase your motorway 'toll' ticket at the border in Switzerland. Failure to do so results in a big fine and having to buy a ticket as well. Good thing is the ticket (stuck on your windscreen) lasts a year. Not so good if only there the once!! Various types of installations of cameras can be seen across Europe. Some are integrated into the verge 'crash' barriers and some are in innocuous posts that look like the black cast iron posts found in U.K. pedestrian precincts. Best to stick to the speed limits! I recently found out that speed camera location data on your GPS is illegal in France (new law came out this year)!

Happy days!

Speed cam location data here will cost you CHF 10000 (approx. £7000) and confiscation of Navi.

The Autobahnvignette will go from 40 to 100 CHF sometime in the not too distant future.

Holy shot! That's some jump,up to 100 CHF.
I haven't been through Swiss for a few years but we used to transit every year on our way to Umbria for holidays.
Got flashed in one of the tunnels in Basel coming home, six weeks later got the fine come through, can't remember how much it was,but it was a 60kph limit and I was doing 84 m'lud.

I think some of the sneakiest cameras are in Germany, some of them are very well camouflaged.
