SORN
#1
My sons car is in a locked garage….it’s taxed and has mot but no insurance, the car will be staying in the locked garage until he can insure it. Question is does he need to SORN it?

In my opinion as long as its taxed I don't think it needs to be SORNed.

Sorn, as I understand, is meant to keep tabs of untaxed vehicles which are being driven on public roads without paying road tax

There may be problems when the tax runs out as You need insurance to tax it.

He needs to SORN it, yes. The law changed a few years ago and you're supposed to SORN uninsured vehicles now.

How long before he intends to insure it? If more than a couple of weeks, then SORN it and receive a rebate on unused tax. It is then very easy in the future to re-tax the vehicle.

SORN it before he starts getting snotty letters and a possible fine. If it is taxed then the assumption is that it is being used on the road.

Thanks for the replays, itsgreen your correct but if it’s in a sealed garage no ANPR is going to pick that up, where not breaking the law, I think it’s a bit of a grey area tbh, Pete could you elaborate on how I would get letter or possibly a fine when it’s in a locked garage? I’m not trying to be funny but as he’s 17 and just passed his test I want to be certain I’m not really doing anything wrong. Btw it’s going to be in the garage for just over a week. Thank you .

Part f the terms when taxing a vehicle you say that it is insured (it used to be that you couldnt tax without insurance and MOT but now it is just a reminder that it should be insured). I do know folk in the land rover world who have had vehicles that are taxed but not insured (because they are being rebuilt) who have had letters threatening fines.
Why take a chance and anyway it will save money
