Hi Guys, I'm looking to buy a Berlingo car (not van). Ideally, I'd like a HDI MK2 with modutop or an XTR MK3 but I'm flexible as long as it has at least five seats. Looking to spend about £1,000 on a MK2 or up to £5,000 on a MK3. Many thanks, David.

Not sure how the Mk's work, so it might be a bit older than what you're after. My 2006 will be coming up for sale in September. 2.0 HDI, Escapade trim (jacked up suspension, arch trims and light cages). It's on 115k at the minute, probably 125k by then. Had a rear beam, quite a bit of rear suspension while it was off, and all new brakes last Christmas.

Thanks for letting me know about your car. I really need something before September. Shame, as I like the look of the he off road style Berlingos. Thanks again, and good luck with your sale in September.

The first Berlingo was the "MK1" (M49), next is only a facelift (M59), ending on 2008, next is the actual MK2 (B9) ending on 2018 and the actual MK3 is the K9 2018-present.

Thanks for the good information Zion. In that case, I'm after an M59 HDI 1.6 or 2.0 (ideally with modutop) or a B9 (ideally an XTR).

Autotrader has 3 HDIs listed under £5k but they are all vans, so probably won't have modutops. They are also all B9s - did the M59 include an HDI variant?
The modutop came with the Desire models. It was their main selling feature.
A small tip: any Berlingo with a Modutop also has two small non-opening skylights in the roof, so it may be possible to spot these in sale photos or when walking past one. I bought solar panels for them when I had mine.
Autotrader lists only one Desire (an MAV S reg with only 35k miles, but for £4450 - ouch). It also has 15 "Forte Multispace" listings - these do not have Modutops afaik.
M59s continue to get thinner and thinner on the ground, but they aren't getting any cheaper. I suppose the bottom line is that any basically roadworthy car/van has a minimum value regardless of model etc. If you only want it for the summer and will then sell it on, £1k may work, but most are over £1.5k. If you want one without hidden headaches and want to get it through its next MOT, I would not spend less than £2k and probably more.
Try Gumtree and Facebook if you know what you are looking at when inspecting vehicles.
People round here tend to leave flyers under the wipers of any sad-looking cars which don't move for a few days, offering to buy them. They are obviously after a quick turnaround buck, but maybe you could try it if you agree with that sort of thing. It might bag you a bargain.
I never had a B9 but have never heard of them having Modutops as such. Autotrader lists 9 XTRs under £5k.
I have seen posts on here about 'internal roof bars' and wondered what they were, and I just found out. See photos 18 and 19 in this ad (I am not recommending the car, only using it as an example):

So maybe you could fashion some sort of tray to place on or suspend from this and the front pocket above the windscreen, to make your own moddytop.
One last bit of advice: the Modutops had a very bad design flaw. They have two 'gloveboxes' for rear passengers, one each side, with hinged doors. The hinges and the doors are all one piece of moulding with the main body of the Modutop, so cannot be repaired or replaced without asking for Heath Robinson's help. The design flaw is that they must only be opened part-way but can be opened fully. If they have ever been opened fully then the hinges will have snapped. The only easy fix is to rip the doors off. Look out for this in sale ads.
Did you know that there are genuine off-road Berlingos? A French company converts them. They only do new cars but you may be able to get a 2nd hand one if you don't mind LHD and can speak French or know someone over there to buy for you. Search the forum for Dangel. And no, I am not having a giraffe or pulling its dangelly bits! I couldn't reach them if I wanted to.

Thanks for the excellent information Gryffindor. I mainly want an XTR as I believe it's the only version with three individually removeable rear seats.
Funnily enough, I saw what looked like a four wheel drive Berlingo a few weeks ago. Left hand drive on French plates.
Thanks again.

I'm not sure if they were available as MPV's, but Royal Mail use Berlingo Trek's around here. Front wheel drive, but very jacked up suspension and an automatically locking front diff.

I think the Forestry Commission may have had some of these back in the day. A bit of googling found this Polish four wheel drive Berlingo with Multispace car style windows but van style bulkhead and extended overhang at the rear. Very interesting for a geek like me. Lol.

The Norwegian Post had a whole fleet of Peugeot Partner (their equivalent of the Facelift edition) Vans with Dangel conversion and 1.6HDi engines. They never stay on the market for long...
The Dangels not only have 4WD, but a Limited Slip Diff, too, so they really Get Around.
The only thing wrong with a Peugeot Partner is the logo in the Grille, so don't hesitate to search for one.
