Stop-Start
#1
Morning. Could anyone tell me is Stop-Start can be disabled via the ECU or must it be disconnected physically. Mine can not be turned on from it’s push button. Thanks

You cannot disconnect it or disable it. It turns on automatically and the button temporarily turns it off, not on. It's a toggle switch. If it isn't working then the problem is elsewhere, like a battery that's not good enough. If it won't turn off, then the switch is probably faulty.

Right, thanks. After some troubles with it mine came back from the garage in what I thought was an 'off' stat - I didn't check it straight away because I was quite happy with it off. That garage also fitted a brand new battery at the time. Another mechanic who recently diagnosed a separate issue said that the Stop/start was not functioning. I guess the original garage 'fixed' it in an unconventional way.

By the way, when you're driving in automatic does the display on the dash display which gear you're in or just two dashes?

Thanks

I'm sure it shows the gear at all times. @John Bilko will confirm, he has an auto too.

It's possible the garage didn't code the new battery in. This usually needs done on stop start cars. Otherwise it stays off as the ECU doesn't know a new battery has been fitted.

Ah OK thanks.

The latest mechanic came out because my trip computer was displaying “Engine Fault” He diagnosed it as a clogged DPF. I’m guessing he just reset the ECU because after he left the trip computer message had gone, but also the gear display just read “- - “, the after market towbar electrics didn’t work and there’s a warning triangle lit on the dash. He muttered something about a towbar module and said there was no “energy” in the Stop-Start.

He’s not responding to my messages (through Click-Mechanic)

Hmmm sounds about right for a monkey who had no idea what he was doing. I think you've been had mate. Stay away from click mechanic. You have no idea what you're getting on there. You can't know what he did and the car sounds worse now. None of what he said, makes any sense. Those statements are nonsense.

Do you know a trustworthy garage in your area? This is going to grow arms and legs btw. You need to get it scanned properly by someone who is actually qualified and experienced in diagnostics.

OK thanks. The only reason I used Click Mechanic is because they come out to you and I was worried about driving the car with the “Engine Fault” message on the trip computer, in case I made it worse or broke down somewhere (I’m out in the sticks) There is a Citroen main dealer not too far away from me. I’ll take in it once someone from the servicing department actually picks up the phone.

Thanks for all your help

Cheers

You're welcome. The yellow triangle means the engine fault is still there. Could be anything at all, and there is no guarantee it's anything to do with the stop start.

(Also for a clogged DPF you don't get the message saying "engine fault", it says "risk of clogging")

But...

That message is most often a problem with the LIN network, which does three jobs. One is stop start, two is the DPF additive pump control, and three is to control the charge current from the smart alternator. If it was my money I'd bet that's the issue.

Very common on Citroen and Peugeot, normally the fault of the alternator. Google "LIN network fault Peugeot" etc.

This fits more closely with the issues you had and what he seems to have seen on his test gear / scanner, but he didn't understand the common root cause of those faults all being present at the same time.

About the start stop:

It has very many conditions for it to operate (=stop the engine). If the ECU is not happy about the conditions, it will not stop the engine. Green ECO light just flashes in the dash as sign for the conditions not matched.

Certainly those issues described above are enough to prohibt it. They have to be sorted first. Gearbox will display show current gear when operating correctly.

Even with no fault codes, the S&S is picky. According to documentation, battery level has to be over 70%, and it is a theorical charge level calculated by the battery management. My 2015 has still the original battery, and S&S works after longer trips or after using external battery charger overnight. But on frequent local trips, especially in winter, the battery management just eventually decides there is no enough juice and S&S is prohibted. This still has no effect on initial crank, for it the battery has all the power. Additionally, the super capacitor for the S&S system is utilized as a booster on initial crank. Quite clever.

I have a 2016 diesel, for me, stop start stops working approx 3 months after a new battery is fitted.
