[Engine] Crank Sensor
#1
Hi all

Can someone tell me where the Crank Sensor is located on a 2008 1.6 HDi 90bhp van is please. I’ve tried looking up previous posts but can’t find one explaining where to look (there probably is one, but I’m useless at useless at finding things) The mechanic has told me that the cabling to the Crank Sensor has corroded away and my van requires a new engine loom (I have already paid another garage £700 for fitting a loom I bought 2 years ago, apparently they didn’t replace the loom, they just patched up the burnt out sections, don’t ask it’s a long story ?), so I have decided to see if I can repair this section and get it to start up, I can then try and find another loom and do the loom swap myself, it not a high mileage and is in pretty good condition, fully panelled out and insulated, so worth saving in my opinion.

Any advice on where to find the Crank Sensor and loom section will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Go to drivers side wheel arch.
Pull off plastic tupperware at front bottom.
Look at crank pulley.
At 8 o'clock, there is the crank sensor.
Probably.

Fix wires.

Buy a cat.

If you are being plagued with random cutting out, it might just need some cleaning up of the crank sensor plug.

Hi

Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated. At least I know where I’m looking now.

Hi

Thanks again. It’s a long drawn out issue, one that I initially got advice on here about (suspect crank sensor as it wouldn’t start), took it to a local garage, they somehow burnt the engine loom (melted the insulation off the wires), but claimed it wasn’t them, paid them £800 to put a replacement loom in, took months, got it back and it ran on limp mode, bought a replacement ECU, it worked for a year then wouldn’t start again, took it to a retired mechanic who said the crank sensor connection and wires are corroded through, I said they can’t be it’s a good loom, he said the garage had only cut out the burnt out section and soldered in replacement strips or wire, garage went under just before Christmas. So 2 years on I find myself back where I started, so I will have a go at fixing it myself.

Sounds like a right mare buddy. You know a full engine harness if you had the time wouldn't be too complex and plugs into the big multiplugs at the ECU end. You could remove yours plug by plug, mark up with tape and Sharpie, lay it out against a good one, transfer the markings to the new harness on the correct plugs and refit.

Down the back of the engine is a bit more awkward but that's about it.

Thanks.

I have been looking for another engine loom but not had any luck yet, so I was going to try renewing the corroded section to see if my van would at least fire up into life. Ideally though I would prefer to do as you have suggested with a replacement engine loom. People keep saying I’m wasting time and money on it, but it’s become a personal challenge now ?. On the whole it’s a decent little van, to be fair it was a great little van 2 and more years ago, until the issue started.

They are great little vans and deserving of the love they get from a committed owner. Good for you.

I think what you're doing is spot on. Solder in the replacement wiring and sleeve with heat shrink.

Ideally if you could find one with a blown engine as a donor, that would be ideal.
