Young person insurance
#1
My son has just paid 4K for years insurance and had a black box fitted today, the bloke said he has a limit of 666 miles a month, are they taking the piss? 22miles a day, I’m fuming, so he’s paid 4K and can’t drive it, I dunno wherever to laugh or cry. I hope he’s misheard the guy or where missing something?

Probably can't drive after 10pm either.

Young male drivers have the highest accident rates in the world. Insurance companies base every premium on risk mate.

Thanks for the reply, I hope you’re wrong about the 10pm as he’s regularly coming in at 1am after work ect. Insurance to me is the biggest legal rip off .

He may be correct about the 10pm line. That's a pretty common limitation in the insurance if they fit a black-box.
But 4K for an insurance, on a Berlingo, even for a 22year old?
Sounds bonkers.
And that's coming from me, living in overpriced Norway...

Gadget man appreciate the reply, lol where did you get info from, he’s 17 and drives a old tatty 2004 seat Ibiza s, the 10 pm thing is not in his insurance terms and conditions, he can only do x amount of miles from 10pm to 6 am or something like that but Yeaa 4K for insurance with black box is frigging bonkers !!!

He'd probably get it cheaper with a 'better' car, no disrespect to your lad but 17 years old + old Ibiza = ££££££££ to the insurance algorithm.
My van: 2008 Berlingo 1.6 HDi Enterprise - a bit ratty!

So he is limited to a certain amount of miles between 10pm and 6am?

His insurance risk will drop at 21 and again at 25. We all had the same thing but now from inflation and the cost of repairs and replacement of cars, it's understandable.

They have to account for your lad (or anyone like him) running head on into a 2023 Porsche Cayman worth £150k or a 1996 Corsa worth £1000, while carrying a car full of his mates.

Either way, they are on the hook for the entire cost, including legal fees and loss of earnings / life changing injury claims or fatalities.

That's why it's £4k. Nothing to do with the car he's driving. It's the potential damage it can cause.

Yes Zion correct….I like your analysis lol. Cheers for the reply’s I do have to agree with Rattycortina as I have done some research and other young people have commented that the newer the car the lower the insurance, my Neighbour son had a old banger and then got a really nice newish car and the insurance was cheaper. Ohh well what can you do . Thanks

No worries mate, I'm sure it will work out in the end. I'm glad I'm not starting again, couldn't possibly afford the costs they want now so I do sympathise.

The newer car reduction will be due to the safety systems on board, airbags, abs, predictive emergency brake assist, crumple zones etc. Old cars like the Corsa mentioned above had none of that, so are much more dangerous in an accident.

Look up the 5th Gear special on YouTube where they crash a little Renault Modus into a Volvo 740 estate at 70, the Volvo was never crash rated and the Modus is 5 star, the little tiny Renault cuts through the Volvo tank like a hot knife through butter, doesn't even suffer a broken windscreen and the doors still work.

The Volvo had it's engine shoved through the front seats into the rear compartment. Via the driver and passenger.
