Scraping? sound at 1K RPM

Hello,

I have discovered a new sound on my 1.6 HDi 110. Sounds almost like something is scraping, purring, or even airflow related? Really hard to describe, so here is a video…

Not really apparent at idle, just when holding at 1K rpm, and especially when revs coming down.

Would appreciate any pointers.

That sounds horrific mate. Could be the water pump bearings, alternator bearing, something like that.

My money is on water pump.

Get a length of semi rigid plastic tube, put one end in your ear, then touch the other end to various bits. The loudest bit is the culprit.

Water pump was replaced with the belt about 2 years/25k miles ago, so I’d hope it would last longer than that.

Alternator might be a good shout. Could be unrelated, and more to do with my installation skills/wiring, but my radio cut out briefly this afternoon too.

I’ll try your trick with the tube. Not like I’d know half the things I’d be placing it on!

It works well, like a stethoscope. Put the end on the water pump casing, the cam cover, the alternator casing, see if anything stands out as louder than the rest.

Also check the gearbox casing, the clutch release bearing could be the culprit. It spins at engine speed whether in gear or not.
