2008 1.6HDi rear wiper motor kaput (van door type)
#1
Hi everyone,

Having killed my previous Berlingo, I replaced it with a slightly newer M59 (as I knew it could get my wheelbarrow in the back!). THis has been a mixed blessing as it has various "characterful" quirks, and I'm wondering if the previous owners sold it because it was getting annoying to fix... Mind you, I'm loving the grunt and economy of the 1.6HDi compared to a 1.4 petrol!

Anyway, Le Van Rouge* is a rear van door-type model (ie two doors rather than a hatch), and the drivers side rear wiper has stopped working. Looking on here it seems as though a replacement isn't difficult (I have the Haynes manual from this site - hopefully it still covers a 2008 model) - a few queries, though, before I dive in - and before I take the card out and check connections etc.

Is it the same part as for the hatchback? If not, are they handed? ETA - Haynes only covers the hatchback motor, so don't know if it's the same.

(deleted - it's not a fuse for each side)

Anything else I'm missing?

Cheers,

Adrian

*It's French, it's (nearly) a van, and it's red. What else could it be?

Brilliant, thank you! I'll check it's not a connection first, but that means I can track down a replacement.

OK - next question - I plan to have a look this weekend. What's the best way of getting the door card off without mangling the pins that hold it inn place, please? I'm thinking lever them off with some kind of pry bar, but I'd like to be able to put the thing back when I'm done.

Thanks in anticipation,

Adrian

You get a tool meant for that job. Search upholstery removal tools on ebay.

Good point, Zion, and something I should think more often! As it happens, that search made me realise I had the very thing hanging on the back of the outside bog door (I kid you not), and the trim came off in a couple of minutes without further munging of the clips. So thank you!

Well, I went in yesterday. Thanks to the good people of Berlingo Forum I now have two working rear wipers, and my rear washers work too (one was emptying itself down the inside of the door... gotta wonder if it got into the motor electrics). Thahks to everyone above!

A couple of "Gotcha!"s I'll mention in case anyone else uses this thread for info later on.

1. With the wiper in the stop position I couldn't get the assembly out of the space. Had to unscrew the nut on the pivot to free the little arm that drives from the motor to the wiper spindle to get enoough wriggle room.

2. If that driving arm is set wrong (I suspect my replacement motor may have come off a nearside door), your wiper will go the other way, and go down your door. Luckily I checked this before I put the arm back on.

The fix I used for that was to (again) undo that nut, and rotate the arm through half a cycle before doing the nut up again.

I now have two wipers that meet in the middle in the approved evangelical "Hallelujah!!" fashion when I wipe. It's not quite right because when I wash the rear windows, they are out of sync and sway like an inebriated 1960s girl group, but it's good enough for me. I suspect that's to do with the drive arm position, but it works so I'm not going any further!

Setting the washer nozzles took nearly as long as installing the motor - now that really is a faff! Not that it's difficult, it's not, but you have to visualise where the squirt will go, then go and check from the drivers seat, at which point you see it as a mirror image of the direction you need to tweak it. Makes my brain ache!

If spray nozzles are available for the car then I'd fit them. I do that on all of mine (the B9 has them already as standard) so no lining up needed...they are the best thing since sliced bread. Someone on eBay will sell them as aftermarket, but look for them off another OEM car in the manufacturers range, often they are cheaper to buy from a dealer. They can be identified as having a slot instead of a ball with a hole in it.

Ta - I'll have a look!

I got an email today telling me that the motor I fitted on Saturday has been posted... presumably my Berlingo actually travels faster than, light I knew those dilithium crystals would come in handy one day...
