Operating Temperature?

Hey folks. Had our car (2litre HDI 2004 multi) about a month now and finally got a drive (the wife loves the fun of the driving it ) Any how just wondering where the temperature gauge should be for normal operation. Mostly its showing 70, going to 90 in traffic and over that when not moving heading toward 100 but seems to come down before it gets there. Engine smells a little hot and the fan has never kicked in yet which makes me wonder if I have a little problem. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Mine normally between 80 -85 rising to 90 occasionally but never seen it go above 90

Thanks. Do you hear the fan cut in? I am thinking if it goes over 90 in winter I may overheat in summer!

To be honest I don't think I have ever heard the fan come on unless it really quiet lol

I see. Does anybody know how I might test the fan? Or maybe I should just wait and see what happens. My horn was so quiet it was doing the "only work with engine off thing" until yesterday when it miraculously healed itself :lol:

Hi, my DW10 shows a temp of approx 83'C (which is what the thermostat is rated at) and takes a while to get there.
I've never seen it go above 90 even when in stood traffic etc.
On mine, the fan / fans switch on via 2 relays (1 fast ,1 slow speed) which are fed from Main fuse (MF) 1 in the engine bay fuse box. This one of the large hidden ones rated at 50Amp.
The relays are hidden somewhere in the radiator housing. (see below)
These are switched on by the engine ecu which monitors the temp sensor that your temp guage uses.
Fan slow speed should come on at 97'C, High speed at 105'C
If this doesn't match your Multispace or if you have air conditioning, PM me your vin no. and I'll dig out the correct details. alut:
1508 & 1509 are the relays, 1506 is the speed resistor.

Hey Thanks for such detailed info. With the slow fan cut in at 97 it is entirely possible that my engine has only crept to 96. When the rain stops I will get my head under the bonnet and see if things look the same as your diagram. I must say I am slightly surprised that the fans are set to activate at such high temperatures. How hot must an engine be to boil and blow out coolant?

The fan does cut in eventually, had this worry last summer, so left the van running for almost 20 mins after driving to get the fan to cut in.

Mine only sit around 70 degs during normal driving around town and less on motorway.
