Gearbox whine
#1
My 2018 Peugeot Partner 50.000 miles has a gearbox whine mainly in 3rd and 4th. Is this common or even normal. It's still under warranty, but I'm not sure the warranty will be much good.

Bit of an update.
The whine happens in 2nd, 3rd, 4th and I think 5th but it's less noticeable.
The whine stops if I put the clutch down or put the car in neutral
The frequency of the whine doesn't change with the gears but does change with road speed.
It happens when accelerating or decelerating
It only happens when the car has warmed up.

it's not normal, maybe the clutch or clutch/wheel bearing

As far as the warranty goes - don't ask, don't get.

Any signs of an oil leak?
Could be worse.... Could be a Caddy.

Are you sure it's not a wheel bearing or CV joint that's on its way out?

No I'm not sure, but if I push the clutch down the noise goes away. The noise does seem a bit intermittent and I haven't heard it in the the last few days but I've only done short runs.

Thrust bearing if it disappears in neutral on pressing the clutch down, they are very prone to getting noisy.

But they are most noticeable in neutral, until they get so bad it's hard to even change gear, then it's howling all the time. That's clutch time.

A whiny gritty sound off the car in higher gears that speeds up with the engine rev range is most likely as said above to be a bearing in the box or the driveshaft intermediate one if it's increasing with road speed.

The thrust bearing is a constant pitch noise regardless of speed, it just gets louder but not higher pitched.

It doesn't whine in neutral or with the clutch down. It's noticeable in all gears but probably most noticeable at about 40 mph in 4th. It only does it when it's hot even then it's intermittent.

I bought this car from a Ford main dealer, they sold it to me with some kind of third party warranty. I'm not sure if I should contact the dealer or the warranty company?

I'd call the warranty company first. They are the underwriters of the warranty and will have conditions on who you can use, procedure to follow etc.

But if you bought the car within the last 30 days then the selling garage has a legal obligation to repair all faults within that period, for 30 calendar days starting on the date you take the keys. Sale of goods act 2000. Must be of merchantable quality and applies to used cars too.
