Fed up getting an email when spammers post in a thread?
#1
From an excellent suggest by @Gryffindor (a long time member)

To stop receiving notifications every time a spammer posts something rotten on a thread you are subscribed to (all it takes is you to post once in the thread yourself) you can always turn off notifications by unsubscribing that thread.

Quote:@Gryffindor:

The problem with turning off notifications is that you no longer get genuine ones which might interest you.

There is away of cutting out the unwanted junk but keeping wanted notices. It can't currently be automated within the forum but us individuals can do it.

Collect a list of unwelcome keywords from these notices, such as fullz, crystal, meth, and so on.

Go to your email app and look for a way to create and edit macros or filters.

Create a macro so that any email with any of these keywords in its subject line and in the message body gets put in your junk folder or your deleted folder.

It is unlikely that a genuine poster will normally use any of these keywords (except me here now).

So... instructions:

Outlook email

Gmail email

For other mail clients like Thunderbird, Google the solution, there will be one.

Hi I am a global moderator on a forum with 22500 members and to combat spam we made it so every first post had to be approved. this removed most of them instantly and it also gives you a chance to check out the profile of a new user. Any links in their profile is a big no no. It is so much better now that we do not have to spend time every morning removing spam, and block the user and IP addresses .
I did get blocked myself bu a german site called spamhuase or somthing like that, which appears to cause problems on forums it was deleted by the admin and does not affect the running.

Hi, and thanks. We know this, but the site owner does not want to change the configuration so it will be manual intervention by us, at least for now. His intention is to move the board over to a new platform in the future, as the current software doesn't easily support these functions.

We use the phpBB software so I can look at new members' profiles before approving their first post which has reduced spam to almost zero. We also warn all users not to open any spam just report it to the team.

Yeah it's up to him, we don't have access to the php configuration of the board and he does not want to change this at the moment. We already mentioned the possibility of us approving new users first posts and it didn't fly. We can ban and remove posting rights of course as well as edit profiles, move stuff etc so we spend a lot of time banning spammers.
