P0263 Fault
#1
And as promised, a fault to find! Big Grin

Having got the Diagbox up and running, today's task was to clear out all the historic fault codes and see what came up.

SYMPTOM - when hot, at low RPM the engine makes a rattle under acceleration. This clears by approx. 1500 RPM. Apart from this the car drves absolutley fine, no apparent lack of power, no smoking. Possibly slightly lumpy idle.

CHECKS - Put a torque wrench to all the injector clamp bolts, which appear to be reasonably tight. No signs of coke\tar at the top of the engine, though visibility s rubbish.

A general google suggests injector coding would be worth a check, betond that I'm suspecting a slightly faulty injector.

Any other suggestions? Smile

Probably a bad injector. If they stop putting the 1 cubic mm of fuel in for the pre injection stage, they rattle like an old school diesel tractor. This is probably what's happening. Peugeot previous gen HDi was famous for it but the other way round. Quiet up to about 2000 rpm then rattled it's head off with combustion clatter. The 1mm of fuel for the pre injection stage would stop working at higher revs on the old 406 HDi.

That tiny bit of fuel starts a flame front and massively softens the combustion clatter to a muffled thump. That's why modern HDis are so much quieter.

But you get used to it and when it stops working, it sounds like a barrel of spanners rolling down a hill.

Yeah, dodgy injector is the way I'm leaning. I'll get a look at the injector numbers and see if it needs calibrating, but I suspect it's a dud. It has a classic injector-rattle, althugh it's actually a lot better since I threw a load of cleaner in the tank, so I may repeat that a couple of times.

Check the live injector corrections, that would show a before and after. See if it improves with cleaner. Avkow output should have a big + correction value.

Good ones are +/- 1ml max usually.

Because I hate to see threads that never reach a conclusion,

- Bought a used injector from eBay,
- Installed and coded,
- Reset the adaptation for that injector only.

Took a while to sort itself out - initially it ran as badly as before, but after a bit of a run it straightened itself out.

Problem solved. Big Grin

Can't say I would -recommend- buying a used part, but it worked out OK on this one, and it was very cheap.
