Rear wheel bearings
#1
Not sure about mine, more likely road noise but it's the sort of sound that creeps up on you until one day you notice.
Haynes just say check for play and listen for noise by spinning the hub
Checked mine -there's no play with the wheel fitted and with it off and the pads bullied out of the way as much as possible there is the slight skimming sound remaining so they need to be taken out .
I can't hear roar or rumble at that speed and it won't have any load on it so the car jacked up -not the best advice .

That aside is there any other check?

The discs themselves and the  pads will survive until after the next mot so I'm in two minds.
Wait until then or risk having the tester find they are gone.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

If you can find a long-ish high speed curve, go round it in both directions, see if the noise changes as the outside wheel loads up in the corner.

From your description, sounds like it will pass an MOT regardless. No play, no roughness, it'll pass.

If the MOT tester spins the wheel and can hear the bearing you may get an advisory. "Wheel Bearing Rough" sort of thing.

Wheel bearings tend to make a lot of noise for a long time before you can feel any play in them, you can have them screaming at you as go down the road and when removed and inspected there is very little to see, so in my experience I wouldn't worry and if the discs are still serviceable I would drive on.

Place your fingers on the axle close to the hub when you spin the wheel, you may be able to feel the noise, (vibration) compare sides, one may feel rougher than the other.

Thanks guys.
A bit paranoid after once submitting for test with a broken front spring.
I had priced up a new one at about thirty quid but having no compressor and little time I just told them to do it at the same time as the test.
Might be £100 but I'll have to take that on the chin.

They charged more than three times that.
It is on my to do list.

Yeah I see where you're at.

Bear in mind the MOT tester will only be spinning the wheel not driving in the car so any sound that occurs at speed won't be present and he will also have the skimming sound of the pads.

Good point.
I found the mot testers guidance manual and it is pretty much saying the same thing.
The bit about brakes is an eye opener-service wear limits aren't fail points so long as the brake is still efficient.
It is on my to do list.
