I was quoted £180 for the mk2 rack from Citroën

But the Citroen rack will fit. I would have thought the Fiamma rack would have cost similar amount. Can you not get a refund?

I considered this Fiamma carrier as a possibility. At £200 it is not cheap, but Fiamma products are apparently excellent quality.
Having looked again at the rear of the mk2 it is not the easiest thing to fit a rack to due to the plastic moulding at the bottom of the door and the irregular shape of the top of the boot, especially around the hinge area.
The Citroen one is at least guaranteed to fit , and anything else is going to be a question of someone trying, and maybe being lucky with one of the many "universal" ones on the market.

Pete,
Not without loosening the door hindges to increase the gap

Opensauce,
I might have to get a refund, but I'm ready to give up yet. When I get a moment I'm going try to get the clamps on the door top by loosening the hinges. Might have to make some. Also, I might have to provide a short extension out from the brackets so as to fit the top tubes if they won't reach. As far as the body kit on the bottom of the door, I don't mind that coming off so that's not a problem.
As far as the citroen carrier is concerned, I don't like it at all. I'd rather try to get this fiamma rack to fit or try to send it back/sell it and get a toe bar cycle rack carrier.

thanks, But I don't want a rack that makes use of straps. This rack is going to stay on all the time and be fairly secure.

Pete illyme:
After closer inspection and with some fiddling I decided that this is a no-goer, so I'm sending it back. Luckily, the supplier is happy for me to return it.
For the record, this is what I tried:
I removed the door trim - which left unsightly holes but meant the rack would sit on the bumper at least.
I slackened off the door hinges in order to get the top brackets over the rear door - they fitted without problem. I tightened up the door hinge.
I offered up the rack, it sat on the bumper and I could see that the upper arms would fit into brackets ok, except the door hinges prevented me moving the brackets out wide enough to do so. I'd also need to drill the upper arms but that's ok.
Further, the lower telescopic arm pads would not sit on the bumper, so the lower arms would need to be bent in towards the bumper.
Overrall not a very good fit! But worth a try.:S
I think I'm going for the safer option of ordering a Thule rack like this one

I've been following this discussion with interest and like the look of the Fiamma rack. We have a 2011 XTR - the rear door looks the same to me as the one in pch's photo, but I can't see anything that I would describe as "indentations" along the top of the door and I'm worried it might not fit.
And, just to double check - is this the rack we are talking about?
Many thanks

yes thats the one.......when I say indentations , if you look at the top of rear door there are two slight cut outs along roof line [in door] . does that make sense. only about 1 inch cut outs, they dont sit in these , they just help to get them on. I undid bolts going through top tubes and repositioned clamps onto car, then marked holes in tubes and simply drilled holes. Refitted brackets and that was it. I then cut of excess length of tube as I need to carry 2 canoes on top and didnt want them to foul bars.
Really was easy, scary...as your cutting an expensive bit of kit, but easy...and as you can see it fits great, safe and locked onto car.
Hope that helps. if you want any pics of any bits, just ask.
Pete
must be the VW T4 lift up door, carrier, not the opening door one [ ie two swing open conventional doors. ].

Have now fitted one of these - a couple of tips for anyone else thinking of doing the same.
First - you do need to cut off the extra length at the top of the bars otherwise they dig into the roof when the tailgate is lifted. I found this out the hard way.
Also, the bikes ride quite high on the rear, high enough to stick out over the roof, but not high enough to clear the lights. Although there's only a spoke or two in the way, I'm reliably informed that's enough to get pulled over, so I'll need to get a trailerboard and fit towbar electrics. I'm guessing that's not going to be cheap.
I still think this is the best solution, I don't like the strap-on racks, so it would be a choice of towbar fitted or something like this. This seems to be pretty solid and has the advantage of being able to open the rear door with the rack fitted.
