What way is th handbrake adjusted?
#1
Hi,

I have a 2011 Berlingo 2. It has rear disc brakes.

I have fitted new discs/rotors and pads and am now looking at the handbrake adjuster.

There is a black thumb switch that seems to relax the two cables running to the calipers. The left and right rear cables are connected to a swivel arm that is connected to the lever at a central point.

Is this the 'auto adjuster' I have been reading about?

Is there any adjuster on these at all, or is it a matter of  flicking the thumb switch to 'engage' and then forget about it, as it is auto?

I don't see a coarse/fine  adjuster anywhere on the calipers.

I would imagine the pivot arm should be equal to the left and right (straight perpendicular) to the lever when brand new discs/rotors and pads have been fitted?

I'm doing the job now, if someone can enlighten me soon, it would be great.

Thanks for that. I will have a read at it in the morn, it nearly midnight here.

Just in from working on it.

Think I'm screwed anyway..........put on the new caliper on passenger rear side ......the inside pad fits as it should, the outer one, not a chance.........gap is too narrow. I'd have to hammer it in from behind but then the pad would not be able to move. Something must have happened this van before I got it. The old caliper piston was jammed rock solid.

Is it possible to remove the spring that clasps the pads in from the cast bracket on the van?

I already removed the bracket and cleaned it with wire brushes etc but was careful around these wee springy things. If they can be removed, I may be able to file away some metal to widen the gap, I need about 1-2 mm more, the pads are correct for the van, as the inner one fitted fine! I could file a bit off the pad edges but need to be sure they will kinda 'snap' in.

I'll look again tomorrow with a fresh head!

Don't file anything.

You need a piston wind-back tool, the rear pistons don't just push back (that's why it seemed siezed, it's not) they wind back on a thread. Halfords sell the tool.

Hi, no I have the tool. The caliper piston was seized solid.......I've fitted a new one and I have to give them back my old caliper.

What I mean is, the pad will not fit on, the little springy retainers that hold on the shoe are against the metal of the cast, no more room for expansion, so not enough width in the cast to fit on a shoe. I was looking online, it seems it is common and people file a bit of the pad flange.

I have to collect my torque wrench toady so will ask them.

Hi, just back from motor factors with my new torque wrench. While there I asked them about the pads and if it would be ok to file a bit off to make them fit.

He went on to tell me that these pads are sold for both the the berlingo and a VW van. These pads have 2 tiers to their edges, he said that some only have one continuous edge flange without the '2 step' design.

He told me it's no harm at all to file to fit, done all the time.

So, with a bit of luck I'll be good to go for Dublin to work later!!!
