2001 : Immo Issue after lay up
#1
Hi,
I have just joined in the hope someone can advise on an issue with a 2001 1.9D.
I am helping a friend put his engine back in after it thre the cam belt. Wuth hindsight, he did not need to remove it but had his reasons.
The job started back in June, he had sone9be ekse help to take it all out but that oerson is no availabke now.
It has been sat with the battery disconnected since June; we got the motor back in and everything connected yesterday. After a double- and a triple-cgeck the battery was put back in.
Unfortunately the immobiliser warning light is lit which appears to be preventing it from starting ( no surprise).
Reading through hundreds if posts on here U tho7ght it might be the BSI. We tried tbe door closed, window down, disconnect, reconnect, side lights on,  ignition on etc routine but to no avail.
Regarding that routine, at what stage does one turn the side lights off ?
More reading and it seems that the BSI was not introduced until 2002, so his car may not have it ? In which case, is there a routine to reset the immobiliser for these non-BSI models?
To add to the complications:
The battery in the sole key fob was also dead - he does not recall if the keyfob ever worked though. There was no documentation with the vehicle when he bought it.
It is a LHD, French market model. Basic trim, no alarm, it may have had central locking but he is unsure.

Any hope ?

I've got a 2001 1.9D and when I bought it (new), I kept having problems with the battery going flat overnight.   It was under warranty so I got the local dealers to look at it.  I can't remember exactly what they said - this was over 20 years ago - but they definitely blamed the BSI, saying it was diverting power to the radio somehow.  They said they changed the BSI and changed the radio, though it didn't solve the problem, so I just stopped using the radio and it didn't happen again.  But the point is, the dealers definitely kept referring to the BSI, so the vehicles must have had them by then (even though I have also heard that BSIs weren't introduced until 2002).

Your 2001 model is at the introduction of the BSI (Built in Systems Interface or as some say Body Systems Interface ). If you have a BSI there will be a diagnostic port which sits beside the cabin fuse box.

If the chip in the key is missing which sits inside the key fob and it can fall out when changing batteries it wont start.

Thank you brodfather11.
The diagnostic connector by the fusebox, would that be a 6-way connector with a blue shell? We spent a lot of time scratching our heads over that one. There is no obvious thing that it can connect to. Also, the pattern of dirt on it implies it was not connected to anything.
The chip is still inside the key fob, it was among the first things that I checked.
Is their software to connect to the BSI to force a reset?

Diagbox /Lexia is the diagnostic software for Citroen/Peugeot vans.

There are examples of the kit on ebay which is cloned software which will do the job . Do a search on ebay . That will give you an idea what is required.

Well blow me down with a feather : My friend has found the 4 character alpha-numeric immobiliser code!
Can anyone explain what needs to be done now ?

If your diag port has only 6 pins, it is not that same as later OBD ports (google for pics), so the Lexia might not be compatible. Just a warning to check further before you lay out loads of Francs.

I vaguely remember something about entering the pin code using the preset radio station buttons on the radio?

Not so sure about that. The code is a 4 charactr alpha-numeric, that means any character between 0 and Z, four times. The radio can do 0-9 but the 26 letters are more tricky.

If I remember correctly the early models had a keypad into which you entered the code before it would start. On the R/H drive models it was down below the steering wheel on the r/h side.  Would obviously be on the l/h side for L/H drive van.

And if you put in the correct code then disconnected the keypad it would start without having to re-enter the code again.
