Airbag light
#1
I have recently purchased a van, I noticed the airbag light was on then looked and the airbag ecu was unplugged. I have since plugged it in, initially it wouldn't start but now seems ok. I have done the BSI reset procedure (followed instructions on here) I have also purchased a lexia 3 and plugged it in. When it tries to read the airbag ecu all I get is Error F022 Fault: no communication with the airbag ECU.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong as I've never used the software before, anyone got any ideas? Do I possibly need a new airbag ecu or get it reset?

TIA

I would be looking why the airbag ecu was unplugged in the first place, Previous collision?

I would say you will need a clean airbag ecu(matching part numbers) and programme using diag telling the vehicle it has a new airbag ecu installed.

It should communicate. Something is very wrong. Take it back to who you purchased it from. You were sold a pup.

Who disconnects an airbag controller then sells a vehicle... A conman that's who.

At a guess, if you got Diagbox far enough to report that fault, then it is working fine. The fault must be elsewhere, and someone else couldn't fix it or couldn't be bothered.
I would try checking for a break in the signal path, such as a disconnected wire or damaged PCB solder pad. Or a partly loose connector block.

Did you do the global scan? It's what Diagbox does first on connection. As Sikes said you can try fitting an identical unit but it will need coded in the replacement parts menu..maybe worth trying to code your one in first, then see if they works.

Maybe the one in your van is not the original, and has the wrong (previous ) VIN programmed into it, as the ECU holds the crash data too, so something isn't right. Or the fuse is blown for it.

F12 on the BSI is the fuse you want to check. The BSI is hidden behind the glovebox. Best to remove the glovebox to get at it and fight your way (gently) through the mess of wires...

I think it was the global scan I don't but would need to double check. Was the first time using diagbox so not 100% I'll defo try to code my one first. Is there a way to check that I have the original or not? I will double check fuse also

Checked fuse was a little discoloration on the legs of the fuse but it wasn't blown, replaced anyway. I hunted through diagbox but unsure where I go to recode the airbag ECU

I just googled "diagbox recode the airbag ECU" and got lots of hits incl a YT vid.

Very worryingly, a lot of them were headlined something like 'clearing crash codes' - so has your car had an unrecorded smash??

Just done a check and it has had mild damage in 2017, I guess a good shout would be to get the airbag ecu reset? would it give the communication error if there was crash data on the airbag ecu?

I think, they tried to hide the accident by swapping the airbag ECU and now it's the wrong one. You will have to look at the replacement parts menu in Diagbox, I've never tried to code a used Airbag ECU to another vehicle. It may not even be possible with a used one. You will have to get googling and see what YouTube holds.

Because it won't be possible to get it mot'd again with an airbag light on.
