Hi
So I've just bought a multi its on an 03 plate, now heres the problem, the keyfob doesnt work, by the looks of it the buttons have worn out and has just been taped together. I've got to manually open all doors and the boot which is a pain in the arse due to needing them opened for most journeys.
When I unlock the drivers door, you can here the actuators click like its trying to unlock all doors also the lock/unlock button on the centre console will also try to lock and unlock the doors, but does nothing apart from click (its only one click, so its not like it clicks open then clicks locked again)
Any ideas where i can start to try and solve this problem?
Thanks for any help.

20 year old car...could be the locks are all sticking. At least the electrical parts. No simple one-off fix there I think, but taking one at a time, door card off, get to the lock controller and see if you can clean and lubricate it with a graphite based spray. Get one working and repeat.
Could be several different issues across the doors. Broken harness wires, broken, jammed or worn out locks etc.
Sorting a new key will require skills too, or at least a locksmith who can match a key to the car. On 03 onwards you now have a BSI (Body Systems Interface computer) and it's the immobiliser too. This is where a key would be coded but that needs software (Diagbox for example) and the original pin security code from when the car was new.
If the system was generally ok, it would unlock from the dash button. Since it doesn't, you have a few faults on your hands. I'd start with the locks themselves and go from there. One by one.
Which actual model do you have, very late M49 or early M59, since general chat isn't the place for a fault thread. I'll need to move it when I know where it should go.
I'm putting it in the M59 slot for now.
Is it like this (I know that's a van)
Or this

It sounds like BSI trouble, have a look back through the forum. Hopefully it is something simpler but it's worth a look.

So where does this bit go then ?

If he hears it clunk, but the doors do not lock, then it's likely not the BSI. No BSI, no clunk.
It's probably a mechanical fault at the doors but all 5?...
20 years old, probably sticky..nearly a quarter of a century. Things get stuck. It's a very old car.
I'm always amazed when people buy a 20 year old French car, and expect all things to work.
Optimistic I'd call that. Fettling will always be required, and for ever more.

Hi Zion,
If M59 it the bottom pic thats the correct one,
I can get the keyfob replaced ok Ive done that in the past with previous bingos and eggs (picasso)
Ill start with the locks and make sure they are working freely and then look at the BSI. Any idea what its like to replace a BSI?
Thanks ffrenchie, Ill have a look at that now and see if thats any help too.
Thanks again guys

No chance of replacing a BSI, it's coded to your VIN, Keys, PIN, dash clocks, engine ECU etc.
You would need a virginised exact replica of the same BSI, L, M or H function level, same part number etc and then the eprom needs copied and transferred to the new one. Then you have to program it to the current car using Diagbox.
It's a faff. Needing an electronics specialist to do the first two parts.

Oh I knew there would be fettling to do on it I just didnt know where to start with that problem as ive not come across it before lol,
when i went to look at it it had a few problems, easy fixes but managed to knock a few ton off the asking price because of it so that money is now going into fixing the more fiddly awkward jobs
