what clutch make

Afternoon all

i recently bought my first B9 Berlingo van, 75hp, the clutch bite point is quite high up but no slippage or bearing issues and is easy to change gear. it suggests that it is worn so was looking at clutch kits and the vast difference in price of them. Ive always used LUK in the past. Is it worth saving money and getting a deferent make one, what do people recommend from past experience?

What sort of price was that for fitting and parts Pete? I'm in the same boat, although won't replace it until it's just about dead.

I've just fitted a LUK one to mine, was under £100 for a 3-piece kit, cheap enough that I wouldn't go cheaper. £80 flywheel skim on top of that as it had a couple of heat spots.

Other parts I fitted at the same time, partly required, partly as it was apart anyway and sod taking the 'box out twice for the sake of a £15 oil seal.

How many hours labour did you put in @shtu - and be honest, was it a week?

My clutch was done at a trusted garage which is a Bosch service centre and it was £1400.

It's ok saying under £100 for a clutch kit (bargain basement clutch) and then a list of parts after that, but how much in parts and potential labour would it have been - as its misleading to say "I got a clutch kit for £100" as most users would not be doing it themselves, if they had a life.

Then a list of additional parts as long as your arm afterwards...

I'd guess that £1400 is about 8-10 hours labour plus parts.

I'm well known for not having a life. 20ish hours, a few of thiose wasted by not having a workshop manual and working single-handed off the floor. There's plenty posts on here from me saying what a monumental ballache the job's been.

Point I was making was "A decent one is £100, isn't that cheap enough?". It's also not a big propotion of the cost if you're paying someone else to do it.

It's a not-unreasonable list of what parts I needed, and what could be considered when the job is being done - The crank seal is a £15 part, guide tube about a tenner, fork about the same. Frankly you'd be daft not to change them while the gearbox is out. Or you're risking paying £1400, twice.

Ah no I agree totally with you, but most folk wouldn't be able to do the job or if they could, they can't put 20 hours into it so they face paying the big bill.

If someone says their clutch is on the way out, and they think "ok £100 or so, sounds not bad", then get a garage quote of £1400 they would fall over.

Better to be realistic and tell both sides or both options, then people are better informed on what to expect, especially new users. Folk will latch onto the £100 message and only hear that first.

Ahh. I think even the old Cavaliers and Astras that could have a clutch swap without removing the box were more than that. In 1985.

The place I had the flywheel machined had one in recently for the same job, and even with a lift, a full workshop, and a bloke referred to as "the van master" they were still swearing about it. It's not a cheap job, at least partly because it's such an industrial-strength ballache.

My DIY efforts are about £200 deep in parts.

Top tip for the OP - all the major manufacturers have technical support - use it to get the correct fitment. The parts factors were wrong on the correct one for mine.

LUK replied to email within a few hours, as did Sachs.

Most of those parts will suit almost anything, but check against your own specific car. In particular, factors couldn't get the clutch fitment correct even when given chassis numbers and engine codes. The tech support email contacts could.
