Electric fan draining battery when car turned off
#1
Bought a 1.6 diesel berlingo 2013 plate and the guy i bought it off said only issue was the electric fan running for arou d 20 to 25 min when turned off. Told me it was a sensor.
Put it in garage to have looked at they have changed sensors with no luck. Now telling me dpf could be blocked do i eant them to do a dpf clean for £200. Surley id have a dpf light on if that was blocked. Just wondering if any ones had same issue

There's no DPF light to put on. If the fans run for 20 mins after switching off, it's trying to do a regen.

You need good diagnostic kit to do anything with these vehicles. A generic reader will not do anything.

The DPF could indeed be blocked or partly blocked, but it could be many things. Saying "it's a sensor" is just meaningless nonsense.

Proper diagnostics is required to know what the various parameters are showing to know what is actually going on.

Is it just over 100k miles by any chance? If so, the DPF will likely need cleaning and it needs coded to tell the BSI a new one has been fitted or this won't go away. These are prone to issues with the DPF and it's not easy to get rid of the problems without the right software and adaptors. Diagbox. Google that.

Sorry to jump in on This post but I have the same problem van is running fine but the fan stays on for 5/10 after I use the van . Thai has been ongoing for a while , I used to take it for a good long run at high revs and it sorted it but now it doesn’t. The engine management light stays on . It’s a 63 plate 1.6 hdi with 96k miles . Is there an easy way to clean the dpf or am I best to get a new filter ?

Pressure washing. Search YouTube for DPF cleaning. It's just a steel mesh filter. But once you hit 100k miles, the BSI will assume it's blocked and you will need the Diagbox software to code in a "new" one even if you have it cleaned. Lots of people do the cleaning service for you if need be.

Ok so it could well be blocked if it's the original DPF. You need to get it properly looked at, we're not going to solve it here unfortunately.

No idea what stuff this is but if it was good we'd have heard of it. I doubt it very much.

Diesel's make soot almost all the time and the steel mesh in the DPF catches it, so it builds up. Regenerations burn it to ash, once there's a certain amount of ash, it can't hold any more.

Then it needs cleaned or replaced.

Iv opted not to have it cleaned and im aware that it could be an mot failure but i can get around that. I dont want to pay 200 quid to have an old dpf cleaned so its going down friday to have the inside gutted out and the dpf deleted from system. Do you think this would stop the electric fan kicking in when engine off if it is doing a regen and thats causing battery to die

You would have to get the ECU remapped to delete the DPF, taking the guts out will not stop it trying to regen. Also it will fail a visible smoke test at MOT - DPF equipped vehicles emit zero smoke unlike when the DPF is not there.

Gutting it alone will just create more errors and likely end up in limp mode if it's not mapped out.
