Is it possible to do evening classes in vehicle maintenance anymore? I know these used to be available several years (decades?) ago, but I couldn't see anything in my area when I scoured the internet recently. I'd been hoping there might be a course on welding (amongst other more general car stuff), but the only relevant courses that were on offer were full-time ones aimed at professional qualifications. All the actual evening classes for amateurs seemed to be 'self-expression through basket-weaving' and similar of that ilk.

I think it's a postcode lottery thing, all adult education seems to be down to local colleges now rather than councils as it used to be.
Last time I looked into it round here, it was just NVQ's in vehicle maintenance. Level 2 looked o be mostly health and safety (nothing wrong with that, but I've managed to survive this far with only minor injuries and one workshop fire. Level 3 needed you to be doing an apprenticeship while you study.
Could be worse.... Could be a Caddy.

Yeah, I could try looking a bit further afield. I'm wondering if health and safety killed courses like car maintenance - too big a risk for risk-averse councils (someone might sue for zillions if they break a finger etc.).
I guess I could watch youtube videos, but with something like welding I'd really want hands-on advice and guidance.

I'd like to do some bodywork repairs myself, especially as I'm thinking of buying a classic.

Take a course in metal fabrication / welding then, as welding is not exclusive to vehicle maintenance. In fact they are unlikely to teach welding on a vehicle course of any kind.
