Alarm fitting guide
#1
New to the forum guys, go easy. Van got broke into last night and I want to fit an aftermarket alarm, it’s a 2015 model can anyone help with an idiots guide to fitting an after market alarm system, found a Hawk HA-240 which may do the job, no electrician and no idea what I’m connecting to

It might be a step too far to get this done even with our help, over the internet.

Do you know a garage or auto electrician who could do this for you?

A good place to start would be the installation manual for that alarm. It needs power of course, permanent power from a fuse somewhere, and then needs to be able to detect voltage drop from doors opening, or ultrasonic detection of Intrusion, depends on how it is meant to operate.

I think it's a stretch to go from not knowing what to do, to install an alarm yourself from scratch with help even from the best Berlingo forum in the world. Probably.

If you're in Surrey, these guys fitted my Transit Connect with a Thatcham Cat1 alarm/immobiliser and fitted 2 slam locks for £650 back in 2016. I The alarm was £350 of that price, so I would imagine it would be nearer £450 for that now.

This alarm (Hawk Ha-240) is also an engine immobiliser, you will not be able to fit this yourself, the wiring to disable the engine will be complex for someone who has no idea where to start.

From their own website:

Quote:Hawk Alarms:

WE DESIGN OUR OWN WIRING DIAGRAMS TAILORED TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR ALMOST EVERY MAKE AND MODEL!! Without this the alarm fitting is not straight forward.

I have to say you are going to need to use an installer. This could get very messy and end up with a non working vehicle doing it by yourself with no experience. Cutting into the engine ECU harness on Citroen van is treacherous if you don't know or understand exactly what you are doing.

Worse still, it needs an ignition live and access to door pin switches to detect the doors being opened, and on the Berlingo or Partner vans, the ignition live is a signal to the BSI, not a single wire like on older vehicles and it does not have door pin switches but intelligent door control modules which signal the BSI (body systems interface) it's s a computer which manages all body functions such as locks, lights etc.

You're going to need an installer who knows what to do on these vehicles I'm afraid.

Cheers for the info guys, ok so I just wanted a little extra protection for not a lot of money I guess.

So what if I were to just use it on a basic level so don’t use it for the immobiliser or CDL merely just use it with effectively just the ultrasonics and a siren

As for the door pin switch connections I read somewhere you can use the interior light for this? so could I basically connect it up as in connect the alarm box up with a live and earth (maybe even from the battery) plug in my ultrasonics then connect up the door pin switch connections from the alarm box to the interior light and in essence it would just act as a stand alone alarm, so door locking would still be done on the factory remote key fob, but the alarm siren would alert if the doors were opened (if the interior light came on) or if the windows were broken the ultrasonics would set the siren off ?

Hope that makes sense

Talk to a professional. Really. In the nicest possible way you don't have the skill to do a competent job, and a poorly installed alarm is more trouble than it's worth.

There are alarms that will properly integrate with the existing systems without all that faffing about, eg, https://www.pfjones.co.uk/can-bus-alarm-a4615.html but these also need expertise to install.

Wow what a welcoming reply to a new member, appreciate the insult, but you have no idea what I’m capable of any more than I do you

You didn’t answer the question I was asking either, maybe you don’t know

Get a professional to do it, well I never would have thought of that to be fair

The point of the post is I’m tryna secure the van a little better, whilst keeping costs down and wanted to do a cheap DIY if possible

Hi again, you can put the alarm in kind of as you say but the door pin switches on an older car were grounded, to put the interior light on. In these cars the BSI runs the lights and they are not wired like you would expect at the fitting, I don't think this would work properly, and electronic engineering is my day job.

Maybe you could drill the door frame, fit a couple of pin switches etc and wire them up, but to be honest if the ultrasonics is part of the kit, then it would do a great job of detecting intrusion by itself without any trigger switches.

You just need it to arm when you lock the car, there's a possibility of using the dash locking button signal for that. Or just carry two remotes.

Ultrasonics which are securely mounted and a loud alarm siren would be better than nothing I'm sure, if you leave the door switch aspect and immobiliser parts out. This would still trigger on a door being opened OR the glass broken. Opening the door will disturb the standing wave of the ultrasonics so no door pin connection needed really.
