1.6 HDI VTR 5D 91 BHP
#1
Going to look at a 2014 plate tomorrow in a garage. Are the VTR and XTR same physical car and engine, just with XTR having more bits n bobs. Anyone drive this engine size, car is 2 owners full service history, comes 3 months warranty from a known garage, full mot and fully serviced. Only issue it's got 106000 mile, but from reading Facebook groups past posts, seems peeps don't particularly worry about this as as long as I keep serviced and oil changes fingers crossed should look after me. I won't be a high milage user anyways so over years will level out bit. Oh sorry cost is £5500, plus extra £350 if I want garage to do new cam belt n water pump. Rear seats are the two on bench and 1 separate,  all removable. Look pack, Comfort pack, Super Plus Pack, Wheel air flow covers, whatever all that means. Anyways, rambled on, but new to this, and stumbled across this forum. What you all think. Thanking you.

Get the cam belt and water pump done. It'll cost you more if you do it later

I second getting the belt and pump done now, could be costly if they have been telling lies and the belt goes! It's worth the £350 for peace of mind... (yes I've been there, and it cost me a new engine!)

Is it a diesel? If so, has it had the DPF cleaned, and the Eolys pouch replaced? If not, these will need attention at over 100k miles.

Searching online will answer all these questions.
Various owner manuals and brochures are online.
Detailed specs are also online.

One site to start you off:
https://www.car.info/en-se/citroen
It is a Swedish site so will not understand UK regs or VINs, but you can drill down into models and trims. I got to this which could be yours if you have a 5-gear manual box:
https://www.car.info/en-se/citroen/berli...0875/specs

Parkers is also a useful site, but can be awkward sometimes:
https://www.parkers.co.uk/citroen/berlin...vtr/specs/

Just to confirm, Mr B, Sol is right - ask the garage about these and have them done under warranty if needed, as part of the sale.

AFAIK, not many HDIs are not diesel!

As for how long it will last for, you can pamper it all you like but it really depends on how its first two owners treated it. Don't just glance at the SH, go prepared with a list of what should have been done and when, and go carefully though the SH looking for these.

Also go carefully through its MOT history, noting all advisories and when they came and (hopefully) went, plus compare the MOT mileages with the SH mileages.

Lastly, check the running gear for wear and tear. It is easy to valet a car and easy to be taken in by a well-valeted car.

Have a good rummage through the history. If it's had any big bills (for example, turbo or fault finding) recently, that's a bit concerning that someone might be moving on a problem car.
Could be worse.... Could be a Caddy.

Having an early model XTR [2008 vintage, the first year of the B9 shape] the things that are differences between the VTR and XTR. The XTR has an increased ride height, with  heavy duty springs. Also has a large steel under engine pan to protect the underside. XTR Comes with the modutop overhead storage as standard and the glass roof panels and roof bars [although a lot of VTR models do have the roofbars but I think those were an option on the VTR] One thing that wasn't standard on VTR was air-con which I think you probably would want given there is so much glass on a Multispace. The XTR models also have three single removable seats in the rear, which makes it very flexible.

One other thing that slightly concerns me about your purchase is that you say you won't be doing many miles. While the Berlingo is an extremely practical vehicle [this is my second, I had an M59 version previously] I'm not sure I would choose one now especially if not doing many miles. Not only for the increased diesel costs but also because diesel vehicles after 2010 had DPFs fitted and later on eolys fluid and ad blue systems. DPF do not like low mileage, short journey use and it can seriously shorten their life and the eolys and adblue systems of Berlingos [and other vehicles] are prone to problems none of which are cheap/easy to fix.

So IMHO if you really think you need a Berlingo and you want a diesel, I would look out for a 2010 or earlier model that has neither a DPF or eolys/adblue systems, as that is likely to give less problems, especially if you are only going to be doing low mileage/short journeys.

My 2008 XTR [no DPF] still manages 55+ to the gallon according the the MFD and in the real world from my calculations always returns over 50 to the gallon, which for a vehicle of that size, I'm happy with....whether I can afford to keep it going forward as I regularly go into the outskirts of West London, is another thing [as it's not ULEZ]

@Multispacer, very well said. Excellent point about the DPF, Eolys and Adblue - they are a pest and nothing but trouble by the time you hit 70-100k. Mine have both had issues with the Adblue injector and the Multiplexed Additive Pump for the Eolys, currently fighting with that problem now. This will be my last ever vehicle with Eolys (stupidest idea ever, thanks Citroen, you muppets) as even Ford and Volvo dumped the Eolys idea in 2010 while Citroen stuck with it to everyone's dismay. My current van being a 2017, has both systems and nothing but bother.

I also do 5k to 8k per year, it's not a good setup to have together. Short journeys mean the engine is never ever up to temperature, as it takes about 10 miles to heat up and my commute is 5 miles.

If you do short journeys, do not get one with Eolys and a DPF or you will see the inside of a garage quite frequently.
