Need fit a towbar to my 2016 Van.
When I looked at towbar kits there was a note that ‘main dealer coding may be required’
Is there any reason why I can’t just splice into the lights like I did twenty years ago.

Yes, because they are now direct outputs from the BSI computer, unlike 20 years ago.
Citroen say that adding extra to them can make the system to behave oddly and can damage the outputs. There's a large red warning sticker on the rear light harness advising never to connect anything to them.
The B9 comes optionally with a rear towing ECU but some people have opted for just putting a power relay in, not sure how that helps with indicators & brake lights. Others have made this work I think, so someone will come along who can explain what they did. I've never needed a towbar so have never tried.
