Alternator?
#1
Battery light came on yesterday and went off when I restarted. I assumed it was cold weather related and ignored it.

This morning I started it no problems and went inside for a cuppa whilst it warmed up. Opened the door and it smelt of burining rubber/ plastic in the cab. Battery light was back on…

Engine bay stinks of burning smell but no signs of anything obvious. Battery testing fine at 12.6 volts and lights/ radio etc all work but it won’t even try to tick over. Just turn the key and it makes no noise.

So I’m guessing it’s probably the alternator? I read that it can pump too much power through all the cables and that could be the burning smell? I just wanted to try and narrow it down before I fork out for an alt and realise it’s burnt everything out ?

Oh and apologies to Zion who I ignored on my last post, I didn’t have alerts on and have only just seen it from months ago.

The best course of action is to get one of these clamp multimeters that can measure amps when you wrap a + or - cable between the clamps. Wrap the clamp around the + cable that comes out of the alternator and see how many amps you are getting, because there could simply be a broken wire to the battery, rather than the alternator being at fault. These alternators are rather expensive and extremely difficult to replace, my hand is still aching from replacing mine. Plenty of videos around on youtube to source the problem. Only measuring the battery voltage while the car is running is not good enough to blaim the alternator, although it could well be. I replaced mine as it was not producing any amps and the battery was 12.6V while the car was running (measured at the battery posts). I got this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07Z398YWF and I am fairly happy with it.

I think, not entirely clear, Zion is now Sol?
