Wind noise at speed
#1
Hi,
Fairly new owner of a 2022 1.2 Flair Xtr.
Really happy except, when I get to about 67/68mph, I get a "wa, wa, wa" wind noise. (sorry dont know how to describe it!) about 3-4 times a second.
As I speed up, it gets louder, but doesnt appear to get much quicker.

Anyone else, or any ideas ??

Thanks,
Paul

I have a "wompwompwomp" sound from somewhere in the back much like driving with open rear windows. I suspect this comes from the missing spare wheel space as none of my other Berlingos do that.

Interesting. My K9 van has a normal spare wheel and I've not noticed unusual noises from the back, so you might be on to something. Though the only time I get up to 70mph is on the M1, where my concentration is usually focussed on not dying between all the HGVs.....

Similar sort of noise..... but I think mine originates from about head height, somewhere between the windscreen and the back seats?
I don't do much motorway driving, it's usually just a couple of junctions. So checking it, or narrowing it down is hard, especially if theres a lot of traffic about.

Roof bars?
Could be worse.... Could be a Caddy.

I did think about that, but surely, as they were fitted from factory, it would mean ALL Berlingoes would have this noise (and Citroen would have resolved it ? )

It can be a weird one. We had two caddy's with identical roof racks and they sounded different to each other when the wind caught the roof rack. If you're thinking that way, you could try wrapping them in something soft (I use scaffold padding, it's dirt cheap) and see the noise changes.

If your roof bars are square or rectangular in cross-section, or even circular, then the wind is buffeting them at high speeds, causing them to flex halfway along. This flexing to and fro is what makes the noise - just like a violin string. Bars need to be shaped like an aerofoil (a plane wing) to slice through the air.

Won't that make the vehicle take off? Big Grin

I've not noticed any noise with either of my roof racks - one (on my M49) has bars with a circular cross-section, the other (K9) has bars that are square. Maybe I've just never hit that (un)sweet spot speedwise, or it depends on variables like how many bars the rack has, or how close they are to the roof.

I've got a K9 Multispace Flair with the factory roof rails. On the motorway I drive at 70 +/3 but have gone up to 85 when I've needed to get past something, all without wind noise issues. I have had a front wheel balance problem that caused a speed-specific "whomp-whomp" noise.
