[Engine] White smoke on morning start-up
#1
Hi

I hope you're all well.
I have an 04 2.0 hdi 90.
When i go ahead and start the car up first thing in the morning, it's puffing white smoke as you can see

And it knocks for a while. But then, when I drive it, after a bit, the smoke goes away.

What could the problem be?
I scanned for errors and got p0193 and p1166

White smoke like that on start up can be a sign of faulty heater plugs .

P0193 sensor for fuel rail sensor dodgy , may be blocked fuel filter

P1166 may be related.

The mass air sensor may be dodgy .
No doubt someone else will give a better answer

It's not that cold where I'm from. This morning, it was about 7°C so nothing near freezing.

The P0193 is intermittent because I unplugged it while testing.

The P1166 says it's permanent though.

It knocks and smokes in the morning, for a good 10 minutes, then it's fine, no smoke and sounds smoother

Knocking and smoke is incomplete combustion on a cylinder. Either because from low compression on a cylinder or a tired/faulty injector.
Does it drive under load okay or is it smoking/lumpy only when idling?
How many miles on it?

Do a leak test on the injectors (disconnect the leak off lines and put them individually in a small plastic container).
If one is excessively leaking then swop it for another.

If the injectors are okay then do a compression test (make sure you use a diesel tester rated for higher pressures).

Do it cold to simulate your running issues. Do a compression test, if one is lower pressure then pour a little oil in the cylinder to seal the piston rings and retest. If it's higher pressure then it's the rings. If it's the same then it's either the valves or head gasket. Most likely the rings if it's not the injector as mentioned above.
