As I've now disabled my start stop
#1
Because I found the S/S annoying.

When it comes to replacing the battery, is there any reason why I can't now use a wet battery of the same size and capacity, instead of the old AGM that is fitted?

Is there any difference in the charging circuit for AGM, that would preclude replacing it with wet?

Cheers

If you have diagbox, you can adjust the battery capacity and type in there.

I'd stick with the same type unless you change that - AGM batteries have a higher peak charging voltage than the traditional lead acid type.

I recently bought the Topdon Artidiag800BT.

One of the listed resets was for Start Stop.

Thought I'd give it a go and it's now permanently disabled.

There are cheaper scan tools with less resets, but if it gives a list that shows S/S, then you should be good to go, though each capability does vary between Brand and car type / age.

The Stop-Start on my K9 seems to have disabled itself, at least for the last few days - when I turn on the ignition, the default now goes to 'off' in the settings.  The only thing I've been doing differently in the settings recently is also switching on the 'prevention of door mirror folding' - coincidence?  Or could it be that after 3.5 years of always switching the stop-start off manually, I've finally burned a new setting in the BSI's memory? Mine will go off for a few days now and again because it depends on a number of factors such as outside temperature, aircon, battery state etc. In the handbook (page 105 in mine) it details lots of times it won't activate, including things like being on a steep hill.

Before a 2010 B9 1.6 HDi diesel.

As said, AGM uses a bit higher charge voltage. Mine shows charging at 14.7V even on hot summer day. For legacy battery that would be too high.

If the battery management thinks wrong about your battery, it’ll trigger that annoying economy mode too often, and degrades the use of electric consumers e.g heated seats and the 1kW cabin heater if you have those. One of the consequences is SS not kicking in, which some consider as an advance.

As you have that Topdon, go check what battery options it offers for you to code in, and choose the battery to buy based on those.

There does appear to be a third type of battery that is also made for start stop. I think my car has the original battery, it's an EFB battery, what ever that is. EFB batteries seem to be about midway in price between conventional batteries and AGM.
I'm sort of wondering if I should change mine as the resting voltage is only 12.2v However everything works ok except the start stop :-)

Mine was the same Pat, I put a new battery on & the stop/start came back, annoys the f out of me, there's one thing certain, I bet the person that invented it doesn't use it.
