Strange issues
#1
2010 berlingo van 1.6
It’s a strange one. Can anyone suggest what the issue might be.
sometimes Van starts but cuts out after about 5 seconds. Other times it runs fine. Loses power while driving then shutters to a stop. Restarts only after coming to a complete stop. If turning on lights or even wipers sometimes it cuts out. Occasionally when it cuts out wipers start by themselves. To me seems like some sort of electrical issue pulling power away from engine. Has me confused completely any help or advice would help.

One to start with with strange electrical issues like yours, is the engine bay fuse box. These are prone to getting water damage, especially if the scuttle panel drains get blocked then water runs down into the engine fuse box area. I recently had such an issue with my Berlingo, in that I started getting random warnings on the dash and the headlamps and wipers would start up on their own while the vehicle was parked up and not running!!

The thing is, it is not only a fuse box but also has an electronic circuit board on the underside and if water/liquid gets in that it can cause all sorts of weird problems. In my case, the 'liquid' damage was not due to the common cause of rainwater getting in but a rodent has taken up residence inside the fuse box and used it as a toilet. Causing damage to the electronics on the board and in my case the only option turned out to be a replacement which luckily for this age of vehicle was relatively cheap to pick up a used one [about £40 delivered from a dealer on Ebay] and they are plug and play [no coding required] but do make sure you get exactly the same part number unit as the one you have fitted as there are numerous different versions that are used on many different PSA group vehicles.

To check whether you fuse box has water [or other damage] remove the lid [three quick release clips]and look for any water/debris inside. If nothing evident, then I would disconnect the battery and then go through the fuse box pulling the fuses one at a time and look for any corrosion on the 'legs' of the fuses which is a sign of water ingress. Make sure you just pull the fuses one at a time and then after checking refit in turn, to make sure you put the correct fuses back in the correct locations. Any that do show signs of corrosion, either replace or clean up the legs and spray with electrical contact cleaner before refitting [do not use WD40 or such like on electrical components as that can cause problems in itself] There are also about  5 electrical connectors on the fuse box that can be disconnected and checked for any signs of corrosion. Sometimes if the water ingress has not been too bad just cleaning up things and spraying with electrical contact cleaner can be a cure.

Finally if there has been obvious water ingress, you need to removed the scuttle panel underneath the wipers and check the drains on both sides, especially the fuse box side, are not blocked. A common cause of blockage is leaves.

Location of the engine fuse box is the to right of the battery.
