Fozen touch screen
#1
Recently the touch screen on my Berlingo switched itself overnight to French language, and has completely frozen.  The radio still works, but we cannot change the channel.  It is frozen in "settings", and touching the screen doesn't work.  In desperation I disconnected the battery for about a minute, and when I reconnected it the car would not start!  After spending half an hour on the internet looking for help, I tried again, and it started straight away.  However, the touch screen is still frozen.  The clock is at the wrong time, and flashing, but cannot be reset.

My nearest dealer is an hour and a half away, so can anyone suggest how to fix this, or do I need to take it to the dealer?

Cheers,

Colin.

I'm not an expert but the next thing I would try is disconnecting the battery for at least 15 minutes and while disconnected touch the positive lead to earth to completely discharge the ecu. Then reconnect the lead.
Several sites suggest this as a general way of resetting a car's ecu.
Mine recently froze (not sure why) and this worked for me.

I agree
I find resetting old computers works better if left uncoupled for longer.
Nothing to lose
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Thanks guys.  I'm not sure what you mean by "touch the positive lead to earth", and just want to check before I do anything silly.  The battery positive lead is clipped on, so easy to disconnect.  Do you mean to touch this to earth once disconnected?

The last time I disconnected the battery, the car would not start (as I said above) but did start later - is this normal, or is there some procedure to follow when reconnecting the battery?

Thanks again for your advice.

Cheers,

Colin.

I put a new battery on yesterday and the motor needed two full revolutions to start instead of the half revolution that is usual
This morning it was back into normal.
No special procedure.

Once disconnected hold the positive lead clamp on the chassis for a minute then leave it alone for 1/4 hr or so.
The fabled bsi reset would be the next step to try if that didn't cure it.
It is on my to do list.

After I replaced my battery the starter would crank the motor over but it wouldn’t start. I went away to scratch my head returning 15 minutes later and it started at first attempt. Our motors seem to have quirks which those of us brought up on Joe Lucas simple electrics will probably never understand.

I've got a '61 AJS with Wipac electrics.
Lucas kit would be way to complicated.
It is on my to do list.

Again thank you both. I'm more experienced with pre-war Lucas (The Prince of Darkness) electrics. Busy at a vintage track day today, but will have a go tomorrow.

Cheers,

Colin.

Sad to report it didn't work. The engine restarted no problem but the screen is still frozen. All along I've been able to switch screens using the three buttons on each side, but none of the six screens then responds to touching the icons on the actual screen.

I guess I'll phone the dealer tomorrow and book it in for a reset.

Thanks anyway.

Colin.
