Alloy wheels insurance
#1
My tyres are on steel wheels and are nearly ready for replacement,  so I was thinking about getting new alloy wheels too.  Insurance is due in the next two weeks so I'm assuming the insurance will go up with the addition of alloy wheels,  any experience or advice?

Phone the insurers and ask to much their permission would cost is the best idea
There's LOTS of scaremongering around but you might be pleasantly surprised.
My insurers weren't remotely interested in anything on the long list of changes I made to mine.
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

When you say you want to change to alloy wheels, what exactly do you mean? If it's Citroen/Peugeot alloys as fitted as standard to some Berlingo/Partners and other PSA models, I doubt, as has been mentioned, that insurers will be interested as I doubt Berlingo alloys are high on a thieves list Wink

Where you get increased insurance costs is when you add some really expensive aftermarket alloys and even more so if the wheel/tyres are not the size normally fitted to the Berlingo model, so that may increase the cost and also 'complicate' matters if you're ever unfortunate enough to be in any sort of accident, as insurers do not tend to like non-standard additions and tend to use any method to try and avoid a pay out. In that I mean, you may get permission to add some expensive wheels/tyres from your insurance company but in the event of an accident, the other party's insurance may refuse to pay out for a non-standard fitment of wheels/tyres.

Finally, alloys are not all they're cracked up to be on a Berlingo, which let's face it is a van based vehicle with the ride quality to match. Steel wheels actually have more 'flex' in them than alloys, so you may find, adding alloy wheels give you a harsher ride.

Well you were correct, I talked to the insurance company, same wheel and tyre size, insurance went down by 70p , I guess you take more care and so it is a lesser risk ? The alloy wheels are just to look better the steel wheels with wheel trims I think make the whole car look shabby.
