Thermal blinds vs unlined blinds
#1
Hi all,

Just been out for a test weekend in the new Berlingo. A 59 plate diesel with the Modutop.

Now I’m after some decent window blinds and the main decision is between the thicker, padded/reflective thermal blinds or thinner and less bulky blackout material blinds.

The pro for the thin ones is that I can easily leave them in the overhead compartment without taking up too much room compared to the thicker ones. But, seeing as I have the glass roof, is there much benefit at all to having thermal blinds? Even if the kit contains the ceiling ones? Seeing as I need to have the windows open to cut down condensation anyway I’m wondering if there’s no point to the thermal blinds which will only take up loads of space.

Thoughts and experiences appreciated!
Thanks,
H

During the proces of creating a roadtrip van, I noticed the complexity of thinking. I think that I am number 1 when it comes to that. So, I recognized the questions too and nothing to say when they told me; at night it is dark, and why not using a face sleeping mask? Doesn’t use much space at all.
And still I wouldn’t listen 100% and make thin layers of thermo blinds (too). I can always change them later for the thick once and store them under the matrasses, while driving.
Are you sleeping alone in the camper? In relation to condensation, what is your experience (and action so far?. Sorry for the extra questions………. Regards and success with testing it out. Please share it with us.

Used my B9 Multispace [and M59 Multispace model previously] on various trips across Europe. We didn't have a fancy set up, just a quick set-up tent for two of us [the type that goes up in under 5 minutes] while two slept in the Multispace on air beds. Both my vehicles had the Modutop with the glass panels in the roof. For blinds I just made my own, as the cost of pre-made ones wasn't worth it for the amount of times they were going to be used. What I did was make cardboard templates to get all the required size and roof window shapes, then I bought about five of the thin reflective windscreen covers that are very cheap the kind of thing in the image below and cut them to size and bought a packet of rubber suction cups to attach them to the inside of the glass. I think I bought about five of them [from one of the German discount supermarkets] for about £12 and then about another £5 for a packet of suction cups. One blind was used on the outside of the main windscreen [as in normal use] while the other four were cut to shape for the remaining glass. The good thing about these home made blinds is that they thin, light and have good thermal properties [mainly in the case of keeping the inside cool]

As far as condensation with the two side rear windows open that was always enough, without having to do anything more. If it was really warm, I would just crack open the front windows a small amount. In this respect, the older M59 model was better, in that the very rear side windows in the boot space also opened on the catch [like the rear passenger ones] so we could have all four rear windows open on that model.
