Not Starting when warm
#1
Hiya,

I've had a look through the forum but I've very little capability to check and change things myself, so I think ultimately I'm going to have to spend the money for a mechanic. I just want to make sure I pay for the right thing.
My new (old) 2006 1.6 16V multispace is having an intermittent starting problem. Seems to start fine when cold, runs fine, then if it's anything further than about 2 miles, will not start again until several hours later. Doesn't crank, just a click when i turn the key. There's power, i.e. the dash lights stay bright. I've checked the voltage on the battery and it's 12.6. My brother is more knowledgeable than me (helped me service it) and he says the petrol pump is priming. If it's applicable, there's another click from the engine bay a few seconds later. We've tried hitting the starter motor at the same time as turning the key but nothing.
I was just wondering if anyone has had the same issue and what was needed to resolve it.

Thanks for reading!!

It definitely sounds like a starter motor issue to me but it might not actually be the starter, in that older Berlingos can suffer for poor earth return leads [corroded or working loose] If you have a set of heavy duty cables such as jump start leads you could try running a lead from the negative side of the starter to a good known earth point on the bodywork or onto the engine block and then try if that cures the fault, it if does, then you have a bad earth return. There have been reports on here both of loose and corroded earth points.
If that doesn't cure it, then it will be more than likely a starter motor mine went on my B9 Berlingo a couple of years back and was totally random in operation, with sometimes it going for a good few days [or sometimes weeks] without a single failure and then suddenly just 'no crank' and the click as you describe.

Starter solenoid. My M59 1.6 16v I bought in feb did exactly the same, changed the starter and its been no bother since. Picked brand new one up on fleabay for around £30 from a seller called carpartsinmotion, working spot on at the moment.

Thanks so much for replying both! It seems like the consensus is to just get a new starter, and to make sure the connections are good at the same time. More research required to see how cheaply I can fix it, as it's in such a difficult position. I will definitely try to check the earth connection first though.
Can you believe I was quoted £80 just for a diagnostics check??

I bought 'Bernie' (as the kids have named it) in December for a cool grand as it had been sitting on a driveway for 3 years and had no MOT, so I've had to spend a bit at a garage, getting it through it's MOT: suspension, wings, front tyres, ABS sensor. Then I've saved some money by servicing it myself with the help of my brother. I've made window blinds and I'm in the middle of building a boot jump and just want to be able to use it now! My brother says I should just take it to a garage as I've saved so much on the price of it, but basically I have no spare money, so I need to be sure that anything I spend is essential.

So I'm really grateful for any and all help from here.
