Air filter box
#1
Hello again.

I  have a problem with the air filter lid.  The torx socket has rounded (on the right hand side) but all the others are out. The garage that I use say that they need to remove the wipers and then the plastic scuttle to gain access to remove the box and then drill the screw out.  This sound drastic and  an expensive fix with labour at £50 and hour!

Has anyone had this problem and has anyone any ideas for a method of doing it myself? I know from past Vectra experience that removing wiper arms that have never been off since a car leaves the factory is a world of pain I would rather avoid.

Thanks in advance.

I've just had a look at mine and can't see why they'd have to do all that work ?
The air box only has 3 x screws in the front which all look accessible on mine..
I'd probably 1st try to knock the screw around (anti-clockwise) with a screw driver or small sharp chisel until far enough out to get a pair of pliers or grips on it, if that didn't work you could maybe get a battery drill in on an angel and drill most of the Torx head off, you'd definitely get in with a Dremel tool or similar small grinder.. Worst care scenario look for a cheap replacement cover on eBay then just use a bit of brute force to get the old one off, probably be a lot cheaper than using a garage..

If you can't do it yourself, I'd be trying another garage as the one you've been to are either easily beat or taking the p@ss..

Thanks for that.  I kind of thought that it was a rip off in waiting.  Sometimes I just need someone to say 'don't be daft try this instead', so thanks again, i'll give it a good go! Smile Smile Smile

Dremel could turn the torx head into a slot head then use a screwdriver to get it out.
If yours is the same as mine 8v 1.6hdi then it sounds like that garage is full of sht.
Three screws at the front and a clip on the right hand side
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

My thoughts exactly.

Also - try a few different screwdrivers, a smallish flat-blade may well catch enough to undo it. Different sizes of torx, try a couple of hex, etc.

Edit,

Refit the other screws and clips, take as much tension off the rounded one as you can.
