When I put on the ignition, dash lights come on including ABS, and then when I start the engine, the ABS light goes out, then after a few seconds the ABS light comes back on and at the same time I get a warning beep.
My brakes still work, but I get a feeling they are perhaps not as efficient as they were.
I've not yet started looking at it, but I intend to shortly.
If anyone has any advice to offer, perhaps even experienced these precise symptoms before and know how to pinpoint the fault, it will be greatly appreciated?

What you describe is how the system indicates an ABS system fault. Note you might not actually have an ABS fault, it's just the system is sensing there is, there are a number of reasons why you could get a fault indication, including a wheel sensor fault, build up of rust/dirt on hub that moved sensor away, so it's not detecting the wheel properly, wiring fault [which are common on the M59 model] etc
When the ABS is sensing a fault you will notice the brake pedal will judder when applying the brakes.
What you really need is a diagnostic read out to show what the fault being sensed is [ie a diagnostic will sat something like 'no indication from front nearside wheel'] without the diagnostic you are really scrambling around in the dark and could end up changing a lot of components unnecessarily.
Generic OBD code readers are no good on PSA group vehicles unfortunately.

Thank you Multispacer, my brother had a code reader and it found a fault code - see attached image. This should point me to the correct wheel, hopefully it will be something simple to resolve. Thanks again

That's good, so things to examine on that wheel, are the sensor itself, resistance of sensor [compare with another wheel sensor] and whether there is no dirt/debris between the end of the sensor and the sensor ring on the wheel.
I note that it is s rear wheel, some other members on the forum have reported broken wires in the conduits that are in the rear wheel arch and across the rear axle, so all things to check for. Hope you manage to find it but it's actually good it is reporting a permanent fault as it points to either something like a sensor or a broken wire, it's the intermittent faults that are normally a pain to trace!
