Turning over, not starting part two.
#1
Hello all.

Well i thought that replacing the relay behind the battery was the solution…and it sort of was as the old relay was buggered.

However a couple of days later the same thing……car cranks but does not start with blue smoke out the exhaust while cranking.

So time for the fun game of elimination…..first, the can that holds the fuel filter, was slightly leaking from the priming button so this was replaced as i thought perhaps fuel is leaking here enough that it will not start?  Nope, no change.
But bubbles in the line from the filter to the injection pump were seen. So perhaps one of the leak off pipes was leaking or damaged letting air in allowing the fuel to back flow?
So next, intake manifold off. 7mm nut on the inlet pipe from the airbox. Two rear bolts of 5mm two front of 6mm, then disconnect the electric connector on the front of the throttle body, then the small air pipe under the throttle body, and the power lead for the glow plugs on the right side of the  throttle body. Air pipe on the right of the inlet manifold is held by two clamps that can be removed with pliers as well as the steel egr pipe on the left of the manifold. It is simple then to wiggle lift the manfold up and away.

A good look gave me no indication that the leak off/return pipes were leaking or damaged. But, i have been told that you may not see anything evident with old slowly perishing pipes.
I had no spare pipe to replace them but i did have a one way fuel valve.

So more head scratching and tea and i thought nothing lost if i fit the one way valve in the fuel line from the fuel filter canister to the fuel injection pump and if i am getting leak back this will stop it when the car is sat overnight.
As the manifold is off this makes access for this job easy.
So….pinch the line connecter at the canister to take that end off and remove the 17mm banjo bolt on the fuel injection pump. Don’t loose the two copper washers.

One way valve fitted. All back together.

Battery charged up as i used a fair bit of it cranking to no avail earlier.

Prime the lines with a few pumps at the canister.

Crank it over….and again…..and again…..and again…and just as i was thinking….”f**k it” she fired!
A buttload of black smoke out the back and it kept running.
I warmed her up and turned off. Starts normally.
So i will let her go cold and see what happens tomorrow.

Cheers all.

I had problems with a 1993 xud 1.9 d similar to yours , It was the solenoid on the fuel pump not advancing/retarding the pump injection timing , It took a while to start with great clouds of blue smoke when it did and after that started perfectly all day . When cold next day same struggle.

I don't know if your solenoid is working or not but maybe worth a check?

I am not yet convinced i have it sorted. I just started it again with no problems but am not sure as it has not been that long. I will try again in the morning.

But i will certainly bear that in mind…..at the risk of sounding a bit dim, not unusual for me, which bit is the solenoid on the pump?
