Turning over, not starting part three.
#1
And hopefully this trilogy ends the matter!

So, the car was sat overnight. With bated breath i leapt in the drivers seat and cranked her over……and that is all i did, she did not fire.
Bonnet up and primer button hit a few times, it did not get hard, but I cranked again, this time after a little bit she fired up and ran.
After she warmed up i turned her off waited an hour and started her again with no issues.

So evidently still an issue.  Well it clearly is a fuel supply issue (at least to me!). I recall a good while ago I had to prime the fuel and the primer button got good and hard after five or so plunges so this is where i started. If i recall right, if it does not get hard then there is an air issue somewhere from the fuel tank to the point the fuel pumps out of the canister holding the fuel filter.
So, i can not check in the tank easily but it is half full so i presumed that was ok, lines from the tank visually checked, all dry and dusty, join by lifting eye good and pipe into canister good. Now i am confused as the filter and canister are new but i unclipped the supply pipe and took the lid off to have a look.
First thing i saw was there is no o ring in the lid. I double checked my old one and there is an o ring there…….who would have thought a new one came without? I never thought to check. Whether they forget to attach one or i am meant to use the old one i do not know.
O ring swapped over and all back together, fires up fine.

I guess i will wait a few hours and see how we go… hopefully this is a simple fault of the o ring not being there.

I am now quite hopeful.

And an update.

Well the car has consistently started now and run. However the first start of the day is a 20 second crank with blue smoke followed by it bursting i to life with a cracking great black cloud!
For the rest of the day there are no starting problems so i can only presume there is still a fuel leak back somewhere. Everything looks bone dry around the fuelpipes and leak off pipes so i can only now presume the fuel injection pump has an issue.
But it works!

As you will know , the blue smoke is unburnt diesel so some condition is not right for instant starting , you have the fuel but not the ignition. The black smoke is the unburnt fuel in the system burning.

Is your pre-ignition heating relays working ? they should work on your model if the coolant is under 20 degrees c..
Newer ones dont really need a preheat system .

Sounds like the old issue of valve clearances having closed up - common fault.
