gearbox oil leak diff housing?
#1
Hi there

im trying to track down the torque setting for the 3 bolts which hold the (what i can only describe as a driveshaft extension) to the gearbox. its the piece that the longest driveshaft slots into. i changed the clutch back in may and when i drained the gearbox oil there was only around 500ml came out, strange i thought but carried on and got the job done and back on the road. After that i started to notice drips of oil on the blocks under the engine, i replaced the driveshaft oil seals when i did the job and have confirmed they are not the cause, it only leaks oil when driving so has been difficult to pinpoint the leak and im sure is gearbox oil as i have since drained it and refilled and it had lost around 200ml over the course of 1000 miles or so. i have changed the o ring which sits between the gearbox/diff housing and the piece i am trying to describe but fear i may have over tightened it and its leaking again. i was under it yesterday on the drive with it in 5th gear running so i could see the where the oil is escaping and im sure that its the joint between the two pieces where i fitted the o ring which is the culprit. it runs down and drips off the bottom of the gearbox where the flywheel is, i used mobil 75w 80 gearbox oil which i believe is the correct one. has anyone got the torque settings or is it just a light nip that is needed?

A photo of the leak and surrounding area would be a help to understand what you mean .

"O" rings are usually very dependable and either it got nipped when fitted or the casing has a small crack in it or a bit of dirt has got trapped between the faces .

A small nip up is enough if the "O" ring is OK.

If I don't have a torque setting, my rule of thiumb is "hand tight with the correct size spanner". It's partly why spanners are different lengths. Not "hang my body weight off it" or "brace against something solid", just tighten by hand without bursting a blood vessel.

If you haven't already, give the area a good cleanup so you get a clear view where it's coming from, and a new o-ring wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for the replys. Apologies for the delay as I've been travelling abroad, the leak is with a new o ring, and ive tried tight, not so tight. Am starting to think there is a bigger issue than just the o ring. I don't want to drop the box again but may end up having to. I have photos but struggling to get one to upload
