Heater blower resistor vs relay vs motor
#1
Hi all

I know there are lots of threads on this but I'm not sure of the right one for me! Any help greatly appreciated.

I have 2006 Berlingo Multispace Desire 1.6 petrol. Looks like an M59 when I search and look at pictures.

Heater blower stopped working and smelt a burning smell coming out of the air vents. This was months ago now. If I turn it on I still get an acrid smell coming out after a bit. Heater blower doesn't work in any setting.

I thought it might be the resistor. Found a video on YouTube where the person accessed the resistor from under the bonnet and under the wiper motor. I've done this an found a green resistor just above where the actual blower fan sits. I've not been able to pull this resistor out. Doesn't want to budge.

Resistor looks like this. Also picture is attached. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174503765511

Would it be obvious if this was broken i.e. would it look a bit burnt?

Now reading it might not be the resistor as the highest blower setting tends to work when this has gone??

Others have posted about the relay. Not sure where it is on this model. Under drive side fuse box maybe.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Dan

Dan, from memory when I had problems with my Berlingo Multispace blower [admittedly on a B9 model but the resistor pack is the same] you had to remove it from inside the vehicle as there is a connector which you heed to unplug on the resistor pack and then you needed to release a screw [also on the inside] and the resistor pack pulled out from inside the vehicle.

The relay in the system [again assuming the same as a B9] was on the passenger side [on a r/hand drive vehicle] up above and behind the passenger glove box. To access it you need to release the liner [pull out type fasteners] and pull down some of the lining. The relay is on a circuit board above there and is the plug-in type so easy to replace if you need to change that.

I did also own a M59 Multispace Berlingo but never had any air-con issues with that vehicle [all the issues on that vehicle were other things.....]

Hi thanks for your reply

On my Berlingo when you pull down the lining passenger side glove box area all I can see is the heater blower itself. On the drive side where the fuse box is there is a small green box which looks like a relay and similar to videos others have put up in relation to blower motor relay. It's not very accessible. It's also not obviously burnt out. I don't want to pull the wrong thing out.

I've attached a picture of this green box and it's location.

It does look like this relay which I've found on eBay. Link below and I've also uploaded a screenshot.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/254562105755?...R_T-3uWeZA

Just been having another look this morning. Fuse looks intact. When moving the blower dial there is no noise 1 - 3 and then between 3-4 I can here a clunk and because I've gained access to the top of the blower itself I can see it move a little bit when I here this clunk. Don't know if this is helpful. Presumably there is some form of power going to the blower as it moved a bit.

That certainly looks like the relay. If there is some movement on the higher setting, then probably not likely to be the relay, more likely the resistor pack or even the blower motor [they do occasionally go]

If you can see the blower from the passenger side, then you should be able to locate the connector for the resistor and be able to disconnect it and then remove the screw on the base to pull the resistor pack out [from inside the vehicle]

Hi

Since your message I have checked that relay and at least to the eye it looks good. Not burnt and looks in good condition.

I accessed the resistor from under the bonnet and the wiper motor but couldn't pull it out. Tried to access it from passenger footwell but when ai look up all I can see is the blower itself. If I need to actually unplug the resistor from within the car then I think I will need to remove the blower and /or remove the glove compartment.

Didnt have the right size socket for the blower bolts. I'm guessing they are around 5mm in size...anyone know?

I also wasn't able to remove the glove compartment.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Also with the bits I'd removed under the bonnet I had direct access to the top of the blower. It was seized and. not moving but managing to get it turning. Unfortunately didn't change anything though.

Thanks

The resistor pack that fails but leaves the 5 setting still working is a different type, and usually only found on the M49. And yeah, that one needs to be removed from under the bonnet. Trust me, I tried removing it from the inside. That was painful.
The reason it still works on 5 is that on that setting it actually bypasses the resistor pack entirely.
I'd post a picture, but I smashed flat the pair of broken ones I had when I scrapped the car last year. Man, that felt good...
(It's rectangular, with a metal cage and components inside that cage )

Hey I think we have accessed the resistor the same way from under the bonnet and under the wiper motor. Yours however sounds like a different resistor to mine. Yours is this one I think

https://www.autodoc.co.uk/nrf/13865416?u...p5EALw_wcB

I've attached a picture of my resistor. Thin green rectangle.

I couldn't pull it out by hand. Couldn't see any clips to release. It's been in there many years. Maybe I just need to be a bit more aggressive and try get some pliers around it .

Clunk and slight movement would suggest the blower and or motor being at fault. Could be something stuck in the fan and the overload may have cooked the resistor as well. Check the fuse rating is correct also as should have blown first.

How did you go in the end with your issue. I am having the same problems on a 1.4L Petrol 2005 M59 Berlingo
