[Steering & Suspension] Torsion bars
#1
Anyone got info on torsion bar specs for 2001 2.0hdi ? When I bought the van (Nu Venture Surf Motorhome) the suspension was very low at rear. In fact the wheels were rubbing on the wheel arches.
I fitted MAD spring assisters which have lasted 5 years and remember seeing mastic smeared around the ends of the bearings when I fitted the springs.
As wheels are straight and axle operates without creaking n groaning, I’ve deduced that at some point the rear axle has been rebuilt. I’m also convinced that whoever did it didn’t set the ride height correctly or the torsion bars are weak.
So I’m thinking of biting the bullet and trying to get the torsion bars out either to replace them or to set the ride height properly.
Any advice on this greatly appreciated. I’ve watched numerous videos on YouTube ( including some in French) so think it’s within my capability.
Regards

After watching numerous YouTube videos, a Russian guy measured 260mm between bump stop points on chassis and trailing arms. I’ll have to confirm this myself today if it stays dry.
Any tips on removing torsion bars ? I’ve seen Piggypowers video using a puller on one end, but his axle is 306 type which is different to berlingo

There's torsion bar content from the earlier years of this forum
Iirc it can be difficult/impossible to remove the bars if they have been in there a good while and the advice was at the time to get a reconditioned axle complete.
If that's possible more than a decade later of course...
It is on my to do list.
But not right at the top

Yes I’ve read most of the older posts. But can’t see anything that relates to information I need. Is there anywhere that also fits rear axles on exchange ?
Having spent most of today under the van removing the shocks and trying to clean out the crud from the grooves for offset washers on the torsion bars. Whilst under there I realised that the top torsion bar is actually the anti roll bar, which is clamped at either end. So having realised this, it seems there’s ever more potential nightmares waiting to get me undoing the torx bolts on the other ends of the torsion bars. So I resorted to plan B and decided to just stick the new spring assisters in and drive it.
Looking at the setup of the radial arms, my plan to adjust the torsion bars to give better ride height may be flawed. There doesn’t appear to be enough room to lower the radial arms any further then they already are. So I may be buggered anyway ?
So with plan A out, plan C should I try it, is to fit some adjustable air shocks like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/354789082674?...5qO&edge=1
Anyone tried them ?
