New clutch fitted, but no good.

Hi all.
We have got a 2004 1.9d multispace. I bought it of a friend when the clutch went, and he replaced it with a new Dispatch. I replaced the clutch as the thrust bearing had started to go through the pressure plate. I didn't notice at the time that the bush was also missing on the clutch fork. When it was all back together the clutch was very low and it snicked all gears up and down the box. I took the box out again (after seeing pics of the arm with a bush in) and replaced the complete arm with a genuine part. I put it back together again and the clutch was exactly the same. I thought cable then maybe, but a few people have said its probably the cheap clutch. (It was a Q and H clutch kit.) I have just taken that cable off to go and get matched up as I can't bring myself to remove the gearbox for a third time in 3 days without trying a cable first.
Any thoughts and suggestions will be most welcome.

Hi again, just an update. I fitted a new clutch cable this afternoon and it is worse. Can't get any gears now. Im thinking the box is going to have to come out again and try a better quality clutch.
Any other ideas before I rip into it again tomorrow most welcome.

Hi, sounds like you're having a tough time sorting this one out. Was the gearbox in good order before you changed the clutch assembly, if it was, it seems unlikely it would be a problem now. If as you say 'snicking' do you mean not changing cleanly through the gears, sounds like there's not enough clearance. Might be a silly question but is the clutch plate in the right way round?

Hi thanks for reply. Yeah she is being a bit of a pig at the mo.
Box was fine before clutch went, the guy I had it off was a metal structure inspector, and travelled form the midlands, to Scotland, and down to Cornwall in the same week on a regular basis.
Yeah it does seem like its not got enough clearance, she just catches the gear as you change up and down the box.
I put the clutch in flat side to the flywheel, which I thought was how the old one came out, and how a clutch usually fits, unless I have missed something on these. I didn't think the fat side of the plate would clear the flywheel bolts if fitted the other way, but anyone let me know if I am wrong illyme:. Your never too old to learn.

Playing musical gearboxes is no fun. I can't offer any insight on which way round the plate should go but if the new cable is adjusted ok but has made matters worse it sounds like the box iwill have to come out again.What a pain!

I recommend LUK or original parts.You get what you pay for.Good luck.
A haynes manual might be a good investment.
Clutch normally goes flat side to flywheel.

Sounds like worn synchromesh or selector forks if it's not the clutch. Possibly...

There are a couple of videos on Youtube, but the video quality isn't brilliant, nor the sound (at least on my laptop). As Ron says, Haynes manual could be handy - maybe even support your local library if they have one!

As Ol'Jeffers says, it could be synchro/selector forks, but presumably the gear changes were previously clean.....

Have you any way of comparing the amount of movement on the clutch arm when the pedal is pressed ? My partner clutch lever arm where the weight sits only moves 1.5inch/35mm from rest to fully depressed. Its working ok. If your not getting at least that movement then look at the pedal/cable mounting etc.
Other reasons are the clutch release bearing wrong size/one for the model you've got ie not long enought for to release the clutch disc,
faulty clutch disc, faulty cover plate
or a knackered box , you could always drain a little oil out of the box and see if its full of metal filings ?
I dont think the quality of the replacement clutch matters here as long as its the same dimensions of the original. a poor quality disc would not last as long as a good one but should preform ok for awhile.
Q & H used to have a bad name but vastly improved now.
